“Whose wheels are we taking?” Viper asked.

“We’re borrowing Sailor and Waverly’s truck until I buy a car,” I said.

He opened the driver’s side door for me. “So where are we going?”

I grinned. “Our new rental.”

Chapter47

I unlockedthe front door of Mia’s rental and pushed the door open. “Oh, this is perfect,” I said.

Viper came in behind me.

I looked up at him. “Could you live here?”

“Sure.”

I raised my brows. “Sure? That’s all you’ve got to say?”

“You’ll be living here with me, right?”

“Right.”

“Then I don’t care where we live. As long as you’re there.”

My gaze softened. “This doesn’t seem fair.”

“What?”

“Darcy just lost her husband. Lily and Cam lost their father. The club lost a brother—a good man.” I shook my head. “And I’m—”

“Happy.”

I swallowed and nodded. “Yeah, happy.” I walked farther into the house, opening the cabinets in the kitchen and exploring the bathroom and the two bedrooms.

“You’re allowed to be happy.”

“Even when everything goes to shit?” I asked softly.

“Especially then.”

“Didn’t take you for an optimist.”

“I’m not. I’m not even a little bit of an optimist. But what if the shoe was on the other foot, huh? What if I’d been the one who died?”

My breath hitched.

“Darcy would have been relieved to have Gray come home to her. She’d lie in bed next to him, thanking her lucky stars that she didn’t have to bury him.”

“Lucky,” I repeated. “Right.”

“It’s the luck of the draw. And she and Gray got the fucking short end of the stick. But his death wasn’t in vain. He died because the club made a tough call. Gray died a hero.”

“Lily and Cam,” I murmured. “Losing their father so young…”

“Was it any easier at nineteen when your dad went to prison?”

“My dad didn’t die.”
