Viper nodded and opened the back door and gestured for me to get in. He closed the door and then went around to the other side.
The drive was silent, but every now and again Willa turned around to look at me.
I glanced out the window, my painkiller-addled brain trying to process what had happened.
It seemed like every time I finally felt comfortable taking a deep breath, life tackled me, knocking the wind from my lungs.
I frowned in confusion when I saw we were driving the opposite direction of our house.
“Where are you going?” I asked Duke. “Home is the other way.”
Duke looked in the rearview mirror, meeting my gaze, but then Viper’s.
It was Viper who answered. “We’re staying at the clubhouse.”
“Damn it, Viper. I just got sprung from the clubhouse. I don’t want to live in the dude fortress again.”
Willa snorted out a laugh.
“Don’t have a choice,” Viper said. “Not until all this shit is sorted.”
“Any idea when that might be?” I demanded.
“No.”
With a sigh of frustration, I leaned my head back and closed my eyes.
“What happened?” Willa ventured to ask.
“Willa,” Duke warned.
“We were both shot,” Viper said.
“Yeah, I got that much. You’re not going to tell me, are you?” Willa asked.
Viper didn’t reply for a moment and then he said, “I made an enemy in prison. He got out, and it looks like he’s got his heart set on vengeance.”
“Oh.” Willa turned back around.
“Fucker shot my woman,” Viper stated. “He’s a dead man.”
I reached over and grabbed Viper’s hand, linking my fingers with his.
He glanced at me, and I gave him a cheeky grin.
“What?” he asked, pitching his voice softer.
“I kind of like the violent side of you. Your protective streak is making me all gooey inside.”
Viper’s crack of laughter echoed in the car. “You are batshit crazy, woman.”
“I’mperfectfor you.”
“Guys,” Duke said. “You know we’re still here, right?”
“Be quiet,” Willa said to him. “They were just getting to the good stuff.”
