I was suddenly so tired I didn’t think I’d have the energy to climb the stairs, but somehow, I made it. I closed the door behind me and immediately dropped my purse on the floor and sat on the edge of the bed to unlace my boots.
Next came the jeans, and then I crawled beneath the covers.
It was easy to banter and joke in front of everyone, but now, in the quiet of the room, I finally let my guard down.
I was coming to terms with what could’ve happened.
Viper could’ve died.
I could’ve died.
But I didn’t have any regrets about my actions. To protect Viper, I’d do it again.
I drifted off to sleep in a haze of painkillers and acceptance. I’d done the right thing.
I’d taken a bullet for the man I loved.

“Sutton,” Viper whispered.
“Hmm.”
“Sutton, move over. You’re in the middle of the bed.”
“Get your own bed,” I slurred.
“Thisismy bed.”
With a bitter curse, I scooted over and tried to get comfortable again. “What time is it?”
“A little after one.”
“In the morning?” I asked.
“Yeah.”
“I took an eight-hour nap. Damn it. Now I’m awake and my arm hurts.”
“Need some painkillers?”
“Yeah. We didn’t get our prescriptions though,” I said. “We were supposed to do that.”
“I had a prospect grab them. Hold on, lamp is coming on.”
I shielded my eyes but could still see the golden light spreading through my fingers. I slowly lowered my hand to allow my eyes to adjust to the light. Viper was still fully dressed, and he stood next to the bed. He riffled through a white prescription bag. “Nope, that’s mine.” He dug around in the other. “This is yours.”
“We have matching antibiotics and painkillers. How cute are we?” I quipped.
He didn’t smile at my jest.
The couple that gets shot together stays together.
I swallowed that joke, knowing he wouldn’t find it funny.
Viper didn’t seem to have a sense of humor about me getting shot.
He grabbed a water bottle from the side table and handed me a couple of pills. I downed the painkillers, hoping they worked their magic quickly.
