I closed the door behind me as I came into the room and tiptoed to the bed.

Just as I neared the side of the mattress, Viper reached out and grabbed me. Before I knew it, I was pinned beneath him with a knife to my throat.

His breathing was hard, and it took a moment before he recognized me. He threw his knife across the room and it clattered to the floor.

“What the fuck,” he growled.

“Morning,” I wheezed.

He lifted himself off me. “What the fuck were you doing sneaking up on me like that?”

“Seriously?” I snapped. “You sleep with a knife?”

“Yeah, I do. And a pistol over there.” He gestured with his chin.

I glanced at the nightstand. “I sleep with a pistol near me also,” I reminded him. “Fuck, what have I gotten myself into?”

He sighed and then inched closer to me. He gently grasped my neck in his hands and skimmed his thumbs along the column of my throat. “Fuck, Sutton. I’m sorry. Didn’t mean to scare you.”

I blinked at the tender sincerity in his voice, and I nodded. “Maybe sleeping in your own bed last night without me wasn’t a mistake after all.”

His hands dropped from around my neck. “Why are you here?”

“Did I hurt your feelings?” I blurted out. “When I left your room last night?”

He rubbed a thumb over his lips, but it didn’t hide the small smile peeking out. “No, you didn’t hurt my feelings.”

“Then why were you so mad?”

“Because I wasn’t done fucking you.”

My cheeks instantly bloomed with color.

“Why did you leave my room?”

“You said, and I quote, ‘I’m gonna shower’. Not, shower with me, or don’t move from that bed, or I’m not done fucking you. You made it sound like you were done. Like you didn’t want me there anymore. And since I have pride, I left.”

“Guess we didn’t iron out all the shit like we thought.”

“Guess not.” I bit my lip. “I enjoyed myself, you know? Last night.”

“Yeah, I know. You enjoyed yourself twice.” His smirk was wicked.

I pushed against his warm chest, but he caught my hand and yanked me onto his lap. “I’m not good at this shit. I like being alone. I like doing my own thing. But I like your sass, and Ireallylike fucking you.”

“You like my sass?” I asked in surprise.

“Surprisingly, yeah, I do.” He paused. “Everyone else keeps their distance, but you don’t.”

“You make it hard for people to talk to you when all you do is bark and grunt.”

“And yet, that doesn’t deter you.”

“What can I say,Beauty and the Beastwas my favorite fairy tale growing up. You’re hotter than the beast, though.”

“Thanks.”

He leaned against the bed, so I was sprawled on top of him. He gripped the back of my thighs and spread them, gently spearing up toward me.
