“Never mind.” I took my fork and cut off a bite of his crepe.

“What are you doing?”

“Eating your food.”

“I can see that. You didn’t ask.”

“Girlfriends don’t have to ask their boyfriends.”

“They don’t?”

“Your food is mine, and my food is mine.” I rolled my eyes. “Jesus, Viper. It’s like you’ve never had a girlfriend. Real or otherwise.”

“I haven’t.”

I paused mid-bite. “You haven’t?”

“Nope.”

“But your experience…”

He raised his brows.

“I just thought, surely…”

“What?”

“That you had a girlfriend at some point. I mean, you’re like, thirty-six. How the fuck have you… I guess you could’ve been a sexual savant.”

“Thanks for dining with us today,” the server said, setting down the check presenter.

“Seriously.” I looked at her. “Your timing is impeccable.”

“I aim to please,” she said. “And from the sound of it, so does your boyfriend.”

Viper choked on his coffee.

I smirked at the server. “I think you just became my new best friend.”

“You’ve really never had a girlfriend?” I asked as we stepped out of the restaurant into the sunshine.

“Do you ever stop asking questions?”

“I’m juiced up with caffeine and sugar. I have loads of questions, and plenty of energy in reserve.”

“I told you I never had a girlfriend.”

“Why?” I demanded.

He looked at me with annoyance.

“What?”

“You want to know? I’ll tell you. When I was eighteen, I bought a motorcycle and went on a road trip. My bike broke down in one of those really small, really shitty towns that don’t have a lot going for them. In that town, there was a woman, about six years older than me. A widow. I stayed with her for the summer. I’ve slept around plenty, but she was as close to a girlfriend as I’ve ever had, and I like it that way.”

“You still keep in touch with her?” I asked.
