“Just for now,” he said quietly. “Just until we know you’re safe and the dust has settled.”

“Still. As fun as it is having sex with you all the time, I’m going to need to find other things to do between that and working.”

“Speaking of sex.” He suddenly rolled, plopping me onto the bed. “I’m done talking.”

Chapter23

I slept the night through, pinned beneath one of Viper’s massive thighs. Somehow, neither of us hogged the bed or the covers. He didn’t snore, and if I dreamed, I didn’t remember it.

When I woke up, I expected to find him in bed next to me, but he was gone. His boots were missing and so was his leather cut, so I knew he wasn’t in the shower.

I sat up and yawned. My phone was on the nightstand, and it was plugged into the charger. I didn’t remember going to sleep with it that way, so I deduced Viper had done it for me before he’d left the room.

The knob turned and the door opened slowly. Viper loomed in the space. “You’re awake,” he said unnecessarily.

“That I am.”

He closed the door and came over and sat down on the edge of the bed. “I thought for sure you’d sleep a few more hours.”

I yawned again, hastily covering my mouth.

Viper’s lips twitched but he didn’t smile. He just offered me his cup of coffee.

“It’s missing all the cream and sugar,” I said.

“It’s mine. I would’ve made you a cup if I’d known you were awake.”

“Hmm.” I took a sip and grimaced. “Thanks for the offering, but I don’t drink toxic waste.”

He chuckled. “I’ll get you a cup just the way you like it before I leave.”

“You’re leaving?”

Viper nodded. “I’ve got some club shit to handle.”

“But you were supposed to take me to Leather and Ink,” I said.

“Rain check.”

“So wait, I’m just supposed to sit here until I go to work? Will you be back to take me to Shelly’s?”

He nodded. “Yeah. In plenty of time.”

“You’ve got it all figured it out, don’t you?” I glared. “Leave me here to rot.”

Viper gripped the back of my head and pulled me toward him. His mouth covered mine, his coffee breath strong. “If I didn’t have somewhere to be, I’d fuck that attitude right out of you.”

“If you didn’t have somewhere to be, I wouldn’t be stuck here,” I said glumly.

“I’m sorry. Just the way it needs to be right now.”

“Fine.” I scooted out of bed, my tank riding up my legs to show off the curve of my ass.

Viper’s eyes tracked me.

I threw on my pair of jeans and jammed my feet into my boots, not even bothering with socks. “If you’ll excuse me,” I said, yanking my phone from the charger. “I’ll do my walk of shame now.”

“You’re cute when you’re mad.”
