“It’s not.”

“Sorry, but you freaking out over something that hasn’t even happened is kind of hilarious.”

“I’m not freaking out because of that. I’m freaking out because of what you said.”

“And what did I say?” With a sigh, Viper grasped my wrist and pulled me toward him. He opened his knees and wedged me between them. He then settled his hands on the curve of my ass, his thumbs playing with my thong. “Explain why me saying I’d take care of you and the baby freaked you out.”

I nibbled my lip.

“You don’t want to need anyone,” he fished.

I shook my head. “Not that.”

“Then what?”

“It wasn’t what you said. It was how you said it.”

“And how did I say it.”

“Like it wasn’t a big deal.”

He frowned. “It’s not a big deal.”

“Being tied to a woman and baby for the rest of your lifeisthe biggest deal. And you just…I don’t know.”

“What? You expected me to be the kind of guy who’d bail? It takes two people to create a kid, Sutton. Leaving you with something like that, all alone…that would be a real shit thing to do.”

“Yeah.” I nodded. “I know. I just wasn’t ready for this conversation. I didn’t really think we’d ever have to have it. You know?”

“Because there’s a time limit on this thing.”

“Yeah.”

“Do babies scare the shit out of you?”

I shook my head. “No, not really. They’re small and squishy. Should I be scared of them?”

He shrugged. “I just didn’t want you to worry, okay? If something were to happen…”

“Okay.” I swallowed. “I feel kind of stupid. For overreacting.”

He fell back onto the bed and took me with him. I straddled his body and ran my hands up and down his chest, over the tattoo that I’d noticed before. It looked familiar, but I still couldn’t place it.

“While we’re talking about this,” he said, his hands wandering down my hips toward my ass. “Are you on birth control?”

“I am. Yeah.”

“Probably should’ve had that conversation before I slid between your thighs.”

“Probably, yeah, but hormones.”

“Hormones,” he agreed.

“It’s not fair, you know.”

“What’s not?”

“When you need to clear your head, you get to go for a ride. I can’t go anywhere. I don’t even have a car. I have no freedom.”
