I looked around the room at the other Old Ladies. “Help me out here.”

Joni shook her head. “Nope. This is what we do.”

“Oh, I see what this is,” I said with amusement. “This is bribery, isn’t it? This is,please stick around and tame Viper. For my trouble I get some cool leather pants?”

“For the record, you’ve already tamed Viper,” Savage announced as he popped into the living room. Acid was behind him.

“That’s my professional opinion on the subject, anyway,” Savage continued.

“Hey, no boys allowed,” Willa quipped.

Savage walked over to her and threw an arm around her shoulder. “We’re on our way out. Don’t worry, you can talk freely without any of us here.” He looked at me. “Rematch.”

I nodded. “You’re on.”

“You’re a worthy contender. Acid is a shit player.”

“Hey,” Acid said. “I’m no slouch.”

“Compared to Sutton you are,” Savage said.

The two of them moved toward the front door. “Ladies,” Savage said. “Always a pleasure.”

Acid looked at Willa. “I’m meeting Sailor and Waverly at The Ring.”

Willa nodded. “I’ll meet up with you guys later.”

“Cool.” With a wave, Acid left.

“What’s The Ring?” I asked.

“A boxing gym the club owns,” Willa explained. “Acid is teaching my sister and Sailor self-defense.”

“Oh. I see,” I replied. “That’s kind of cool actually.”

“So let’s get back to this barbecue. Does Sunday work?” Joni asked.

“Yeah, Sunday works for me. I’ll make sure to bake enough for the party,” Brooklyn said.

“What about Doc?” Allison asked. “Is she working?”

“She’s always working,” Darcy said, and then looked at me to clarify. “She runs the Waco Health & Wellness Clinic. Wait, that’s not completely accurate. She owns the clinic. It’s her seedling.”

“Wow,” I said. “No doubt the clinic keeps her busy.”

“Swamped is more like it,” Mia said. “But it’s important for the community, and our club is part of that.”

I frowned. “Not following.”

“The clinic was Doc’s idea,” Joni jumped in to explain, “but the club helped. So, our name rings out when people think of it. It’s still her baby, but the community knows.”

I mulled over their words. “Is the club pretty active in the community?”

“We try to do our fair share,” Mia said slowly. “But it never seems to be enough.”

I nibbled my lip, feeling the desire to ask a blunt question, but not wanting to be rude to these women. The club was involved in some violent shit, I knew that much. Were they trying to balance that out by giving back to the city?

“As much as I want to stick around here all day, I’ve got to get back to the bakery. It’s like everyone decided to get married this month.” Brooklyn grinned. “Though I’m not complaining about the business.”
