Page 110 of Don't Let Me Break

But with every moment I spend with Kate, I can’t help growing more and more attached. I’m not gonna quit on her. I’m too stubborn for that shit.

I glance at the hallway, waiting for Kate to appear again, but she doesn’t. Finally, I give in and walk down the hall. I find her in my bedroom, attempting to stretch the fitted sheet onto the mattress.

I rest my shoulder against the doorjamb. “What are you doing?”

She jumps at the sound of my voice and turns to me. “Making your bed.”

“Why?”

“Uh, because I made a mess of your other sheets?” she answers with a look telling me I’m an idiot for even asking.

I chuckle, pushing myself upright and stalking toward her. “All right, my prickly little porcupine.” I wrap my arms around her waist and press my front to hers, her curves molding against me in all the right places. “Don’t get me wrong. You look sexy as hell in my bedroom, but unless we’re married and partners, you don’t lift a finger in this house. We clear?”

“That’s very un-golden retriever-y of you.”

I grin and drag my nose along hers. “And your actions are very prickly of you, my little porcupine.”

“Only with you,” she murmurs, her muscles melting against me as the sheet slips from her fingers, and she wraps her arms around my shoulders.

“Is this you surrendering?”

“About what?”

“About not making the bed.”

“Maybe.”

We sway back and forth as I press my forehead to hers, breathing in the hint of my body wash clinging to her skin. And fuck, if it doesn’t make me hard.

“What is it?” she asks.

“You smell like me.”

“Is smelling like you a good thing or a bad thing?”

“A very good thing.” I kiss her softly, reminding myself to be gentle, and she smiles against my lips.

“You know, if I wasn’t on my period, I’d say you were trying to get in my pants again.”

“You honestly think your period would stop me?” I challenge.

She laughs and shakes her head. “You’re ridiculous.”

“And you’re too tempting for your own good.”

“Mm-hmm.” Rising onto her tiptoes, she kisses me again and pats my chest softly. “If only I didn’t have to go to work today, I’d make you prove it. Any chance you can take me home?”

“Yeah.” I let her go but grab her hand and guide her toward the kitchen, leaving my room a mess. It would normally drive me nuts. I like order. Always have. But for some reason, seeing the sheets in a pile on the mattress makes me smile, knowing it’s because she gave in. She let herself be an inconvenience today, which means she trusts me. And it means more to me than she’ll ever understand.

“How are you feeling?” I question her. “Can I get you any Tylenol or Ibuprofen or anything? I looked for Midol, but they didn’t have any at the gas station.”

“You know what Midol is?”

“Two daughters, remember?”

“Ah, so there are benefits to dating an old guy,” she teases.

A low growl rumbles up my throat. “Careful. You might give me a complex.”
