What are you wearing, Kate?

Me

One of your shirts.

Macklin

Fuck.

I smile and move onto my side, staring at my bedroom door as I prop my head on the pillow. The hallway’s quiet. And he wouldn’t sneak in here, anyway. Not when he’s too damn respectful for his own good.

Me

Do you want to see it? Me in your shirt?

Macklin

I don’t think it’s a good idea.

Me

Personally, I think it’s a great one.

Before I can talk myself out of it, I toss the comforter off my body and tiptoe toward my bedroom door. It creaks quietly as I pull it open, and I hold my breath, waiting for my parents’ door to open and my dad’s angry face to come into view. Instead? Silence.

Yeah. I most definitely should not be doing this. But I can’t help it. I sneak down the hall toward Mack’s room.

He was so sweet with my parents tonight. Withstanding their interrogation. Answering their questions. Saying all the right things.

I didn’t know how much I needed their approval until my dad gave it during dinner. He might not have said it in so many words, but the look in his eyes? The way he accepted Mack’s past? I couldn’t have been more grateful for my mom and dad than at that moment.

I peek over my shoulder and down the dark hallway where my parents are sleeping one more time. Grabbing the guest bedroom door handle and taking a deep breath, I open it.

It’s dark inside the room. Only a faint glow streams in from the streetlight outside the window. Mack’s in the bed. His shirt is off, his hands are behind his head, and his attention is solely focused on me. As if he knew I’d come despite his feeble protest. As if he was waiting for me. The realization makes me smile.

“Hey,” I whisper, sneaking the rest of the way into the guest room. I close the door quietly behind me and press my back to it. “Sorry they cornered you earlier.”

“Don’t apologize. I would’ve done the same thing if my girls brought a guy home.” He smiles and crooks his finger, urging me closer. As my bare feet scuff against the carpet, it muffles my footsteps, and he adds, “I like your parents.”

“Thanks. I like them too.”

“Do you know what else I like?” he asks.

“Hmm?”

“You.”

With a laugh, I say, “I like you too. Although you should know, you’re a terrible sexter.”

“Only because I’m in your parents’ house, Kate,” he reminds me dryly. “Do you know what I’d do to one of Hazel’s or Miley’s boyfriends if I caught them sneaking into my daughter's room?”

“I guess it’s a good thing you’re not the one doing the sneaking,” I quip.

“Yeah, because that makes it better.” He shakes his head, but his gaze heats as he watches me step closer.

“They said we couldn’t sleep in the same bed.” When I’m within his reach, I stop and pull my hair over one shoulder, playing with the hem of the T-shirt I’d stolen to use as my pajamas, smiling as he stares at my fingers. “They never said we couldn’t dirty the sheets a bit.”

He chuckles and glances at the closed door again as he drags his hands along the back of my thighs. “Pretty sure it’s exactly what they were talking about.”
