“You sure you’re okay?”

With a shrug, she gives in and explains, “Somehow, an OnlyFans supporter found my phone number and is sending me dick pics, so I was blocking him when you walked in. It’s why my phone won’t stop ringing.”

“Yikes. Can I help?”

“Nah. I’ll figure it out.” She grabs her phone and silences another call. “It’s late, and I had a long shift tonight, so I should probably get some rest.”

“Me too,” I mutter, running my hands up and down my bare arms.

“I’ll see you tomorrow at four.”

“Okay. Thanks again.”

“No problem.”

Hazel’s Jettais in the parking lot. I don’t know why I’m surprised, but I am. When Blake catches me staring, she asks, “You okay?”

“Yup. Thanks again for the ride.”

“No problem.”

I tug my jacket close around me and step out of Blake’s car, walking into the restaurant. It smells like bacon and cinnamon, and I’m oddly comforted until Hazel comes into view.

She’s staring at me.

Glaring at me.

Like she has a bone to pick with me.

Not today.

Keeping my head down, I walk around her and head to the breakroom, shoving my purse into my locker and tying a black apron around my waist. Once my nametag is pinned to my shirt, I head to my station but stop short.

You’ve got to be kidding me.

Rage, fear, and anxiety battle inside me, turning my stomach into a jumbled knot of regret as I turn on my heel and run smack-dab into Anna.

“Sorry,” I mutter, staring at my white Nikes.

“Where are you going?”

“I was––”

She grabs my shoulders and twists me around. “Tables are over there. Hazel has already started placing customers in your section. Danny grabbed them some drinks for you, but her hands are already full with her tables, so chop-chop, Kate. It’s gonna be a busy day.”

I take a few steps toward my tables, then glance over my shoulder, confirming Anna has already found a new employee to terrorize. Satisfied, I beeline it toward Hazel and spit, “Tell me you’re joking.”

She quirks her brow. “Why would I be joking?”

“Why are your mom and little sister sitting in my section?”

“They wanted brunch. So sue me.”

“And you decided me waiting on them was a good idea?”

“It’s not my fault you thought it would be a good idea to date my dad.”
