Page 85 of Don't Let Me Break

The porch light gives him a halo and shadows his face, making his strong jaw even more prominent. My fingers itch to reach up and touch the slight scruff, but I stop myself.

“You gonna kiss me yet, Mack?” I whisper.

“Give me a second.”

“For what?”

“So I can memorize this.” His gaze bounces around my face and lands on my mouth.

“Why?” I ask with a laugh.

“Because a moment like this doesn’t come along every day, Kate. And neither does a girl like you.”

Not waiting any longer, he bends closer and presses his lips to mine. Hell, it’s barely a kiss. A simple brush of his slightly parted lips. Soft. Warm. Innocent. Yet so damn tempting my knees quake. He swipes his tongue against my bottom lip. Tasting me. Testing me. My boundaries. My desire. My patience.

My breath hitches as I snake my hand along his chest, over his shoulder, and around his neck. His chestnut waves are soft as I weave my fingers through them, tugging gently in hopes of pulling him closer. Of convincing him to give in, to stop teasing me. To put us both out of our misery. Because after the gym, the bull rides, and his hands on me the entire night? I’m pretty sure I’m ready to combust. He smiles against my mouth and nips my bottom lip with his teeth, causing my core to pulse as he pulls away. And damn, I’m not ready for him to pull away.

“Do you want to come inside?” I murmur.

He nearly chokes on his groan but doesn’t budge. “You’re killing me, Smalls.”

“No, I’m inviting you inside,” I clarify.

Tortured, he drops his head back and looks up at the night sky. “I can’t.”

“Why not?”

“‘Cause I’m not like the other guys you’ve dated, Kate.”

My brows knit together. “So, you’re saying no?”

“Gotta earn you first.”

“You haven’t earned me yet?” I question. “Pretty sure you just took me on the sweetest date I’ve ever been on.”

“Compared to the boys you’re used to, sure. Compared to the standard you deserve?” He leans down and places a quick kiss against my lips. “Not even close.”

“Is this another rule in your advanced how-to-woo-a-woman class?”

His laugh warms my insides as he tells me, “I’ll see you tomorrow.”

“Oh, you will?”

“Yeah. At the gym, remember? Gotta help you with your pull-ups.” He slips the keys from my hand, unlocks my front door, and pushes it open for me. “Goodnight, Kate.”

“Goodnight, Mack.”

The keys are cold as he hands them back to me. He takes the steps two at a time, stopping at the base of the stairs to look at me one more time. His expression is laced with boyish awe. It turns me into a freaking puddle in one second flat.

“Don’t forget your medicine,” he adds.

“Seriously?”

“Just taking care of you, Kate.”

“Uh-huh.” I fold my arms and pop out my hip. “Okay,Dad.”

With a smirk, he tucks his hands into his front pockets and rocks back on his heels. “You can call me daddy anytime.”
