Shit.

I hadn’t meant to say that, and now that I did, I couldn’t think fast enough to try to come up with another excuse for what I’d said.

So, I was honest when I replied, “I like that you don’t want me to be afraid of you. In fact, I feel the exact opposite. I’ve never felt safer in my whole life than I do now that you’re around.”

Something warm moved through his expression. “I’m not sure how I should respond to that, but I’ve certainly got a couple of thoughts about it.”

“Which are?”

He grinned. “How about since you told me earlier this morning that you finished up the editing job you were working on and emailed it to your author last night, that you agree to doing something fun with me today after we’re done here? If that all goes well, I’ll let you in on those thoughts.”

I cocked an eyebrow in an attempt to appear brave, but the truth was that my insides were trembling with excitement. This was not supposed to be happening.

He was doing all that he was doing for me, going beyond the call of duty to help and protect me in such a precarious position.

It was risky.

And he didn’t seem to care.

But I did.

I didn’t want to be the reason that something bad happened to him. I couldn’t possibly live with myself if I was responsible for him being hurt.

“I can see you’ve got about one million too many thoughts running through your mind,” he said.

“I’m just worried,” I admitted.

“About what?”

I shrugged. “I don’t know. I’m not sure what it is that you’re looking to do, but doing something fun indicates that we wouldn’t be spending the entire evening at the tiny house. If that’s the case, someone could see us. Then, it’s not only me that’s in danger, but you as well.”

Kane started laughing, put his hand on my shoulder, and urged me to turn around. “You’re funny.”

“What? I wasn’t being funny. I was being serious,” I informed him.

His solid body moved in behind me as his arms wrapped around mine. “I know. That’s why it’s funny.”

I stood there, unable to move, because I didn’t know how to react. Finally, I rasped, “Kane—”

Kane’s arms tightened around me. In the next instant, his mouth was close to my ear, and he whispered, “Nothing’s going to happen to me, princess.”

“But—”

“I’m promise you. Nothing is going to happen to either one of us. You have to trust me,” he said in a voice not to be questioned.

That’s why I nodded slowly.

“Are we going to do something fun today?” he asked.

I was helpless to refuse. He’d worn me down, even if he hadn’t intentionally done it. “Yes,” I whispered.

He gave me another squeeze. Then he urged, “Come on. Let’s get this last one done, so I can get you out of here.”

I didn’t know why, but there was something about those words that I liked a whole lot. So, I executed the moves he’d taught me and got myself free of his hold.

Only when I was standing opposite of him and staring him in the eyes did I wish I could go right back to where we started.
