Video footage from all the rooms in the house filled the television screen like a checkerboard so everyone in the room could see.

“What time?” Saint asked Grace.

“Around five, I think,” she said, her voice shaking with the nerves we all felt.

The videos on the screen moved in triple time as Saint flew through the footage from that day, stopping around five o’clock.

“Right there,” Grace cried, pointing to a box in the bottom corner of the screen.

“Click on it,” I said.

Saint did and that particular footage filled the screen. Martine stood in the kitchen at the island. A cup of something hot sat in front of him. He slipped something small out of his pocket. We all gasped.

“Can you zoom in?” I asked.

Saint did. The small container in Martine’s hand contained something white. Saint zoomed out, and we watched as Martine glanced around before pouring the white substance into the cup. Something spooked him and he spun around, quickly tucking the container into his pocket. Grace entered the screen and her startled expression said what we all now knew. He was trying to kill my mother to get full control of Grayson Industries.

“Bingo,” Sawyer said.

We all turned to him standing at the wide-open safe. The same container was in there but beside it was an unlabeled clear container of white substance.

“Don’t touch it!” I ordered Sawyer before turning to Clay. “Bring the bastard in.” Rage pricked my skin.Knowingwhat Martine was trying to do was one thing. Butseeingit for myself flipped a switch.

“Dude, let me bring him to the station,” Clay said, trying to calm me down. “We have enough evidence to hold him.”

“Bring him in here,” I repeated, my voice now low and menacing. He needed to pay.

“Listen to him, Seren,” Arthur urged.

“I’m gonna need you to step out now, Arthur,” I said, needing time alone with Martine.

Arthur stood, and despite his reservations about allowing me to do whatever I had planned, he hurried out of the office.

“Grace?” I said, holding out my hand to her. “Gloves.”

She moved to me with the rubber gloves. I took them and slipped them on. I moved to the safe and grabbed the container of white substance, checking for a label that wasn’t there. Anger bubbled inside of me.

Clay walked Martine in, though everything on his face told me he knew it was a bad idea.

“What’s this?” I demanded.

Martine said nothing, his lips remaining in a tight line.

“Grace,” I said, “can I have the water?”

She walked toward me with the water bottle. Her smile told me she knew what I was up to and was completely on board.

“Thanks, babe,” I said.

“What are you doing?” Clay asked, the nerves in his voice indicating he was torn between having my back and following the oath he’d taken when he became a cop.

“The same thing he did to my father and was now doing to my mother,” I explained as I set the container and water bottle down on Martine’s desk, twisting off the covers on both.

“Careful, Seren. If that’s what I think it is, it can poison you through your skin,” Grace warned.

“No need to worry about me. It’s him you need to worry about.” I took a pinch of the white substance and dropped it into the water. It barely did anything to the water. No wonder why it couldn’t be detected. “That doesn’t seem like enough,” I said as I pinched more of the substance and dropped it into the water. “That’s better.” I turned with the water bottle now in my gloved hand. “Here,” I said moving up to Martine who was held in place by the two officers grasping his arms. “Drink it.”

“Seren,” Clay warned.
