Laney laughed. “You still need to leave the young one for me.”

“He’s a sweetheart. I wouldn’t want you ruining him,” I joked.

“Hey,” she said and we all laughed.

“I’m so happy I’m sleeping here tonight,” I said.

“Yeah, I can see how you’d want to stay away from the mansion,” Holly teased.

“Or, the male models who live there,” Laney added.

“It sounds better than it actually is,” I assured them.

The loud revving of motorcycles roared behind us, their blinding lights shining into the car and setting it aglow.

“What the hell?” Holly said, squinting into her rearview mirror.

Laney and I glanced over our shoulders. The lights from the motorcycles were moving closer to the back of Holly’s car.

“Oh my God,” Laney cried. “They’re chasing us.”

“Speed up,” I urged.

Holly hit the gas. But, the motorcycles sped up too. I couldn’t hear anything but the roar of their engines. Then, they swerved, speeding up on both sides of us, slowing once they were beside us. That’s when their red and blue lights flashed.

“Dammit,” Holly cursed, realizing we weren’t being stalked by some road-raged bikers. We were being pulled over by the cops. She hit her blinker and pulled the car to the side of the road.

The cops stopped behind us, removing their helmets and slowly getting off their motorcycles. We sat in silence as one of them stayed at the back of the car while the other approached Holly’s side and motioned for her to open the window. She did.

“License and registration,” he said.

“Yes, sir.” Holly popped open the glove compartment and grabbed her registration.

“Do you always speed up when you’re being pulled over?” the cop asked Holly who handed him the registration then began searching in her wallet for her license.

“That was my fault, officer,” I interjected. “I told her to speed up.”

The cop leaned down and looked across Holly at me. He was younger than expected and had a distinct freckle above the right corner of his mouth. “Trying to evade the police is a felony, ma’am.”

“We thought you were crazy stalkers,” Laney added.

He looked at her in the backseat. “Do I look like a crazy stalker?”

“Your lights weren’t flashing,” Holly said to him.

“Step out of the vehicle,” he said abruptly, standing up to his full height. “We’ve got a defiant one,” he called to his partner behind the car.

Panic filled Holly’s features. “What? I wasn’t being defiant.”

The cop pulled open her door. “I said, ‘Step out of the vehicle.’”

My heart began to race as Holly frantically looked to me before stepping out.

The cop led her to the back of the car.

“Shit,” I said.

“This is our fault,” Laney said.
