I nodded. “I was accepted to the University of Tampa.”

“That’s wonderful.”

“Yeah. I’m hoping to go early if I get the internship at the Tampa Marine Life Rescue Center I applied for.”

His eyes widened, intrigued. “Sounds exciting.”

Chef entered through the swinging door between the dining room and kitchen. “Oh, good. You’re here,” he said to me. “Good evening, Sir,” he said once he noticed Martine.

“Chef,” Martine acknowledged him as he picked up a mug of steaming hot tea from the center island. “It was nice meeting you, Grace,” he said before moving into the dining room.

“What did he want?” Chef asked me once Martine had disappeared.

I shrugged. “Tea?”

Chef busied himself at the oven while I pulled on my yellow rubber gloves and began scrubbing the pans.

The door flew open. I looked over my shoulder as Seren stalked toward me. “I need to talk to you.”

I continued scrubbing my pans. “I’m working.”

“Chef, I need her for a second,” Seren demanded.

Chef shooed me away with the back of his hand.

“Who will clean these pans?” I argued, my wide eyes pleading with him to make me stay.

“Go,” Chef said.

I cursed under my breath as I tugged off my rubber gloves and slapped them down on the counter.

Seren moved to the kitchen door that led outside. I begrudgingly followed him out, stopping a few feet away from the door as he kept walking out onto the back patio. He quickly spun around, capturing me in his gaze. “What did he say to you?”

“What?”

“Martine. What did he say to you?” he demanded.

“You stormed in there to ask what Martine said?Really?”

“Yes.”

I spun away from him, heading back to the door. “You’ve got some nerve.”

“Grace.”

I kept walking.

“Grace, I’m sorry.”

I stopped, inhaling a deep breath before spinning around to face him. “For what?”

He at least had the decency to look remorseful. “Today.”

“Were you trying to make me look like a fool?”

“No.”

“Were all of your friends laughing at me for thinking you’d actually been truthful with me?”
