“Iwastruthful with you.”

“Right. You know, I’m not even disgusted with you because you did what Seren Grayson does. I’m disgusted with myself for actually believing you. And,God,” I winced. “You kissed me then turned around and kissedher.”

His teeth ground together. “I told you. Kiki tried to kiss me but you didn’t stick around long enough to see me push her off me.”

I rolled my eyes.

“I screwed up today.”

I crossed my arms because what came next was bound to be enlightening. “According to you, you didn’t. It was all Kiki.”

He huffed his frustration. “I hadn’t thought about how people would react if we…if they found out the two of us…well, if they thought I…”

“I’ll save you the confusion. There’s nothing for them to react to because there’s nothing going on with us. Problem solved.” I turned back around to head to the kitchen.

“Fuuuuuck!” Seren screamed into the night air.

His outburst caused me to jump, but I kept moving and walked back inside the kitchen.

“Next time, don’t let me go,” I said to Chef as I pulled my rubber gloves back on at the sink.

“Does your mother know?” he said, not bothering to look at me as he prepared something on the stovetop.

“There’s nothing to know.”

He didn’t respond, and I hoped he forgot he saw or heard anything becausenothingwas going on between Seren and me.

CHAPTER 22

Grace

I headed to chemistry class with my head held high. I avoided walking by Seren’s locker, but I couldn’t avoid being in English class with him. I sensed the moment he walked into the classroom, and I knew his eyes were on me. But unlike yesterday, he walked straight to his seat.

The teacher’s lecture revolved around Elizabeth walking a very fine line by omitting truths to her family as well as Mr. Darcy. The idea started a class debate about omitting truths being lying. The discussion could not have been more apropos. And while many students voiced their opinions on the topic during the debate, both Seren and I remained silent. Clearly, we’d said all that needed to be said.

At the bell, I stuffed my things into my backpack, purposely taking my time so I didn’t have to deal with him. But it didn’t matter. He slipped out the back door and didn’t wait for me. Why would he? He was doing what I wanted him to do and leaving me alone.

After school, I worked on my homework and then dragged myself to the kitchen. I made sure I stayed at the sink and kept my head down. I didn’t want to have to talk to Chef about anything, nor did I want to risk running into Seren.

“Oh, hello,” Martine said when he found me alone in the kitchen at the sink. Janette was serving the meal in the dining room, and Chef had run to the pantry.

I glanced over my shoulder. “Hi.” I turned to face him, noticing the teacup in his hand with the tea bag already in it. “Can I get you some hot water?”

“No, I can get it myself,” he said as he moved to the teapot on the stovetop. “I’ve just got to getmi amoreher tea.” He poured the water into the cup. “What kind of husband would I be if I didn’t keep her happy?” he said with a smile as he returned the teapot to the stovetop.

“Happy wife, happy life,” I said, having heard that saying somewhere before.

“That’s right,” he laughed. “Be sureyouchoose someone who lives by those words. Makes for a much easier life,” he assured me before moving to the dining room door. “Good night.”

“Good night,” I said as he disappeared into the dining room.

A little after seven, I stepped into our apartment. I couldn’t wait to get out of my ridiculous uniform and into the shower. There was a note on the counter from my mom.Ran to the market.

I spent the next half an hour in the shower, enjoying the soothing sound of the water until my fingertips turned to prunes. I switched off the water and grabbed a towel from the back of the door. I wrapped it around my body, my wet hair hanging loose. I tossed my clothes in the laundry basket in the hallway closet then went to my room. I switched on the lights and screamed, my heartbeat nearly crashing out of my chest. "What the hell are you doing in here?!”

Seren’s eyes drank me in as he sat on the edge of my bed. “Well, you wouldn’t listen to me anywhere else, so...”

I pointed toward the door with my heartbeat still racing. “You need to leave. This is breaking and entering.”
