The sweet sound of her laughter brought a sense of happiness to my gut that I hadn’t felt since she let me kiss her.

“I guess we agree on something,” she said.

I smiled, hating the foreign feeling of it on my face. I’d worked so hard to perfect the stoic look I wore as a badge of honor. Then, one day, it just stuck. No matter the time or situation, I never let anyone see it falter…except Grace.

“Why Alabama?” she asked.

“They offered me a full ride to play football.”

“That’s awesome.”

I waited for her to mention me not needing the full ride since I was rich, but she didn’t. Unlike everyone else, she never mentioned our money.

“Are you gonna get to play?” she asked.

“Their quarterback’s graduating next month. So, I’m hoping to beat out Kenyon, his backup.”

“Do you have what it takes?” she asked.

I tipped my head to the side. “What do you think?”

She shrugged, completely unfazed by my arrogance.

“Well, my name means star, so...”

Her nose scrunched. “Does it really?”

“Come watch me and find out for yourself.”

She rolled her eyes. “What are you majoring in?”

“Football.”

She laughed again, and I was beginning to like knowing I was the cause of that laughter.

“You know, Florida’s not that far from Alabama.”

“Only like a thousand miles,” she said.

“You could stream my games,” I countered.

“Maybe.”

“I’ll take maybe,” I said, hoping maybe turned into yes.

The bell inside the school rang. Grace climbed to her feet. “I’ll see you later.”

“Promise?” I said, standing up in front of her.

She stared up at me, the wheels in her head clearly turning as she considered her response carefully. “Maybe.”

I smiled. “I’m starting to like maybe.”

CHAPTER 24

Grace

I pulled off my rubber gloves and said goodbye to Chef, happy to be done for the night. I walked out the back door and onto the patio. The spring night air didn’t hold the bitter chill of winter.
