CHAPTER 26

Grace

Still reeling from Holly and Laney’s visitandthe run-in with Kiki, I didn’t leave the apartment Sunday. On Monday, I hurried out to the car, running late and nearly dropping my bag onto the ground when I pulled it off my back.

“Can I have a ride?”

I glanced to my right to find Seren standing there wearing his backpack.

“What’s wrong with your car?”

He shrugged. “Nothing.”

I laughed as I gestured to the passenger side of my car. “You haven’t ridden in style until you’ve been in this beauty.”

He smiled, rounding the car to the passenger side and getting in.

I slipped into my seat and switched on the engine. Rock music played from my speakers as I reversed out of the driveway.

“I’m sorry about Kiki,” he said.

“Yeah, that sucked.”

“It would’ve made things worse if I said anything. I figured let her spew her hate and then I could just be done with her once and for all.”

My eyes cut to his. “Sounds definite.”

“I never should have…you know…”

Visions of them in the pool house flooded my brain. His cold glare as he watched me watching them. I needed to remember he wasn’t as hateful as I thought. Guys slept with girls. He wasn’t doing anything she didn’t want him to do.

“Where’d you just go, Grace?” he asked, sensing my drifting thoughts.

I shook my head. “Windham’s just a lot different from Coopersville.”

“Why do you think I’m getting the hell out of here?”

I laughed.

“Go out with me tonight.”

I glanced to him. “I have to work.”

“I can get you the night off.”

“Where do you wanna go?” I asked.

“It’s a surprise.”

Surprise?“Can this surprise happen after my shift? I wouldn’t want to let Chef down.”

“Sure.”

“Then okay.”

“Okay,” he repeated with a satisfied smile.

We arrived at school a few minutes later. I cut the engine then looked to him as he threw open his door. “You want me to wait a couple of minutes.”
