“Come on. I’m driving you today.”

I didn’t hesitate, hurrying to the passenger side of his Land Rover and slipping into the passenger seat.

“Did you like any of the dresses?” he asked once we were on the road.

“God,yes. They were all gorgeous.”

“Which one did you choose?” he asked.

“It’s a surprise.”

He laughed, the raspy sound filling the car. “Well, I can’t wait to see.”

“Are you picking me up in the basement or should I meet you in the driveway?”

“Will your mom wanna take pictures?”

I swallowed, not sure if she’d actually want toseethe two of us together. The idea of it was bad enough.

“What?” he asked, sensing my apprehension.

I shook my head. “Nothing. I’ll have to ask her.”

“She doesn’t want you going with me, does she?”

“It doesn’t matter. It’s my decision.”

He scoffed his eyes remaining on the road. “She’s always had my mother’s back. And the kicker? My mother treats her like shit.”

I said nothing because it was the truth.

“If someone were that loyal to me,” he said. “I’d treat them like fucking gold.”

I reached over and slipped my fingers into his. “You’ve got me.”

“I do, don’t I?”

I smiled. “And, I already feel like I’m getting the gold treatment.”

He chuckled and squeezed my hand.

After school, Seren waited at his car. I couldn’t help admiring the way he leaned against it, so cool and unfazed by anyone. “Waiting for someone?”

He smiled once I stepped in front of him. “Yeah. The new girl who came in and said to hell with everyone in this place.”

“She sounds pretty rad.”

He laughed as he slipped my backpack off my back and opened my door for me. “I’ve got somewhere I wanna take you.”

My brows furrowed. “Where?”

“Can’t you just accept my need to surprise you?”

I laughed. “Fine.”

I hopped inside and relaxed into the leather seat, loving the smell of Seren all around me.
