“Oh, that’s right because of Sawyer.”

I laughed and so did he.

“If it isn’t the happy little couple,” Kiki said, stepping in front of us and blocking our path. “Let me guess. He knocked you up.”

My eyes widened. “What?”

“It’s the only reason I can fathom he’d choose you over me.” She looked at Seren. “Is that it?”

“You want the truth?” he asked her, a scary look crossing his features and causing me to tense beside him.

“Yes,” she said, tipping her chin in an attempt to even the one-foot disparity in their heights.

“You’re a bitch,” he said.

She laughed. “Well, obviously. That’s no secret.”

“Yeah, but Grace isn’t,” Seren continued. “She’s kind and funny, and the girl I fell in love with.”

As tense as I was, hearing him admit that to Kiki had my stomach flipping over itself.

“You don’t want kind, Seren,” Kiki snarled. “You want angry and you want cruel. You thrive on it.”

“You’re angry, Kiki.Sofucking angry,” he continued. “We were never gonna work.”

“Of course we were,” she snapped. “We’re the king and queen of this place. These people adore us.”

I glanced over my shoulder and noticed someone capturing the interaction on their phone. I quickly looked back to Kiki. “Youthinkthey adore you, Kiki,” I said. “The truth is, no one can stand you.”

“Shut up, bitch,” she snapped. “These people follow us and fall at our feet like the followers they are—the ones wetrainedthem to be. They’re nothing without Seren and me.” She looked back to Seren. “We own this place. Just like we’ll own the whole fucking town one day, and these people won’t even make the guest list for the parties we’ll throw.”

“I love Grace.” Seren shrugged. “It’s that simple.”

Anger swept over Kiki’s face. She wasn’t getting her way, and she was coming unhinged before our eyes. She hauled off and slapped Seren across the face.

Before he could react, I grabbed Kiki’s arm and flew into her face. She may have been a bitch, but I was pissed. “Don’tevertouch him again. Got it, bitch?”

“Grace,” Seren said, his hand gently grasping my arm and urging me away from Kiki.

“Or what?” Kiki sneered at me. “You’ll try to fight me like your sewer rats from Coopersville?”

Seren was behind me and now had his hand on my arm. “She’s not worth it.”

I looked her dead in her eyes. “You’re right. She’ll get what she’s got coming.” I spun away from her and slipped my hand into Seren’s as we made our way toward the auditorium. “Did she hurt you?” I asked him.

“She can’t hurt me. And you don’t have to stand up for me,” Seren said, though the pride in his eyes told me he appreciated me having his back again. He squeezed my hand and I knew—at least for the time being—all was right in the world.

CHAPTER 36

Graduation Day

Grace

The sun shone down on the football field as I crossed the stage in my navy cap and gown. I smiled as I accepted my diploma from the principal then held it up toward the audience. My mom and Sawyer snapped photos from their seats amongst the families in the bleachers. I glanced at the sea of navy graduates seated down on the field. Seren, looking so damn hot in his cap and gown, clapped from his seat with a smirk on his face.

That boy would be the death of me.

I stepped off the stage and filed back to my seat. My legs bounced anxiously beneath me. Seren, seated three rows in front of me, had already received his diploma, but he wasn’t the one I was waiting to see.
