“Dude, I’ve been where you are. Gold diggers lurk in the corners just waiting to pounce when you least expect it. Go for the one who despises you. I assure you, she’s the one you want.”

I laughed to myself, knowing that’s the one I had until she decided dolphins were more important than us.

When I got back to the dorm after spending a little more time playing catch with Brooks, I lay on my bed with my phone in my hand. He’d gotten into my head. Scratch that, he’d put Grace into my head. I thumbed through the prom photos Sawyer had taken of us. I looked fucking happy. I hadn’t smiled like that and meant it since before my father died. She brought the old Seren out of me. The Seren who didn’t hate the entire world.

So, what the hell happened?

There was a knock on my door. I rolled off the bed and answered it.

A hot blonde in booty shorts and a tank top stood there. She smiled. “Hey.”

“Hi,” I said, my eyes taking in her scraps of clothes.

“Can I come in?” she asked with a thick southern drawl.

Curious where this was going, I stepped back and held out my hand toward my room. “Absolutely.”

She smiled and passed by me, her swaying hips impossible to ignore as I shut the door.

CHAPTER 41

Grace

The flight from Tampa to Alabama lasted just over an hour and a half. I’d paid cash for my plane ticket and only brought my backpack and the phone I’d purchased. The plane landed just after ten o’clock and I slipped into my Uber. The driver informed me that Seren’s school was fifty miles away from the airport. That gave me time to gather my nerves and concoct some type of plan. I pulled a notebook out of my bag and wrote on a piece of paper, knowing I’d need it when I got to Seren’s dorm room.

My legs bounced as I watched the passing scenery blur by in the darkness. I couldn’t even imagine what Seren’s reaction would be to seeing me at his door. Would he turn me away? Would he even be there? I was definitely blindsiding him by showing up—especially with the information I planned to share with him.

After the hour drive from the airport, the driver pulled through the main gates of Seren’s campus. “Where to?” he asked.

I swallowed. “I have no idea. The dorms?”

“Which one?”

“I don’t know. Do you see any students walking around?”

I could tell by his grunt that he was annoyed by the fact that I didn’t know where to go. We both looked around. Because it was nearing midnight—and still summer, there weren’t many people around. A guy staring at his phone stood at a bus stop. The driver pulled over to him and I rolled down my window. “Excuse me?” I called to him.

He glanced up from his phone.

“Any idea where the football players live?”

“You can check over there.” He pointed in the direction of a multi-level dorm. “I’ve seen a lot of people coming and going from there lately.”

“Thank you,” I said, before looking back to the driver. “I guess you can leave me here.” I stepped out of the car with my backpack on my shoulders, hoping to God I’d made the right decision in showing up there like this. The night air held no chill but my entire body trembled. As ready as I was to see Seren, I was so not ready.

As the Uber pulled away leaving me standing virtually alone, I pulled in a deep breath and walked toward the dorm where he could potentially live. I reached the front door and pulled on the handle. It was locked. You’ve got to be kidding me.What if no one showed up to open the door? Would I be stuck out there all night?

I went to a nearby bench and sat down. I stared up at the building noting there were quite a few dorm rooms with lights on inside. Was Seren in one of them? I closed my eyes, unable to believe I garnered the nerve to even show up in Alabama. This was such a risk.

The front door of the dorm creaked.

My eyes popped open and I jumped to my feet. “Hold that door!” I called.

The guy stepping outside held it for me.

“Thank you.” Before I took another step, I twisted toward him. “Do you know Seren Grayson?”

He looked back at me. “No.”
