So, when we called her phone and got no answer, we really did not know if they were all right. We set out along the road, watching for them all the way, but it was dark by then, and we were afraid we’d miss them somewhere.

We did.

Sort of. We kept trying to call her phone, but it went directly to voice mail over and over. Finally, my phone rang. Sloan was driving so I answered. “Livvy?”

“Yeah, it’s me. Sorry, I had to call back after I pulled over.”

“Why? The truck has hands-free?”

“My phone isn’t paired to it, and I thought it wasn’t the right time to do that.”

I cursed softly. We’d been so busy worrying about anything that might happen and had missed one of the most important things. Typical. “Well, I’m glad you’re being safe. We were so worried.”

“I had no connectivity up there.”

“I never thought of that.” I put the phone on hands-free so Sloan could hear and talk, too. “We should get you a satellite phone if you’re going to be doing this often. Did Koby have fun?”

“He’s asleep, but yeah. He loved every minute of it. Ummm, Justice?”

“What’s wrong? What aren’t you telling us?”

“I forgot the phone in the truck, so even if I had connectivity, it would have been useless. I’m sorry.”

“But you’re fine?”

“We’re fine. I’m so sorry I was so irresponsible.”

Sloan spoke up, “You forgot a useless phone in the truck. We should have anticipated the bad connectivity up there. I’ve hiked and I knew…I forgot.”

“Everyone is okay, and that’s what matters.” I could breathe again, something that hadn’t been very easy for the past couple of hours. “And there’s one more thing we have to do when you get home.”

“Spank me?”

“Don’t give me ideas,” Sloan said. “No, he means marking. Mate, we’ve never marked you, so we couldn’t feel you so far away.”

“Ohhh.”

She was well on the way home, so we turned around and headed that way, too, arriving way faster than we should have. Sloan might have been exercising his lead foot in his hurry to get to our mate. When we got home, expecting to take our mate right to bed and make love to her then mark her, we found a stumbling block. In the form of a panda tumbling around the backyard, chasing a panther.

Clothes off, we joined the melee, something that could have gotten a billion views on YouTube, two big pandas and a little one frolicking with a sleek panther in a backyard. Being pandas brought out our fun side, and in relief, we were especially jolly. It didn’t take long to wear out the second wind our hiking cub had acquired, and as soon as Livvy had him tucked in, we went to our own room and sat on the edge of the bed. We hadn’t bothered to dress, and Livvy wore only a long T-shirt, and we would be making love, soon enough, but the urge to mark overwhelmed everything else, and I sank my teeth into her shoulder on her left side. Sloan did the same on her right, and she whimpered but lay back while we licked the wounds and murmured to her. She held up her arms and gathered us to her one by one, untraditionally marking us as well. Or maybe it hadn’t been untraditional. I wasn’t sure what panthers normally did.

I did know that when we crawled into bed, Livvy between us, we wanted to mark her with more than teeth. We kissed and caressed every inch of her until she was writhing and begging us to make love to her.

Her body was so warm and welcoming, tight and hot, and we did something we never had, with her between us, me kissing her lips, her face, Sloan nibbling around her new marks, I sank deeper into her and he did as well. Her eyes flew open in surprise, but I hushed her and together we moved slowly then faster until she let out a shriek muffled by my lips and came apart around us, sending us both along with her.

We’d never done that with anyone before.

Only our true, fated mate.

Epilogue

Livvy

“Please not chicken,” I said, taking a seat at the table. I’d never been so grateful for a Saturday in all my life. Koby had been so extra-everything this week. Extra rowdy. Extra energetic. Extra loud.

“What’s wrong with chicken?” Sloan chuckled and kissed me quickly.

“It smells funny. I don’t know. Maybe we got some bad meat last time?”
