“Okay.”

EPILOGUE - AUGUST

Fact: Gold is one of the most precious and disputed metals in the world. Scientists believe that 80% of the gold on earth has not yet been discovered.

“Where did you say we were going?” Martin asked again.

Nick was driving, and he glanced over before returning his attention to the road. “I didn’t. That’s the point of surprises.”

“I don’t like surprises.”

“That’s total crap,” Nick scoffed. “You love surprises. Especially the naked kind.”

“I do like those specific surprises,” Martin conceded, continuing to ogle Nick’s profile and wonder how on earth he’d ended up with Nick Waugh in his life.

It was a gorgeous midsummer evening, and the sun wasn’t due to set for a couple of hours yet. They were driving south on Highway 101, having already passed through Aberdeen, and were now headed only Nick knew where.

“It’s a surprise, and it’s staying that way until we get there. Not much longer.”

“Hmph.” But Martin relaxed against the passenger seat, resigned to his fate. Nick was remarkably stubborn. He’d announced this morning that they had plans and nothing Martin had resorted to made Nick tell him what they were doing or where they were going.

While Nick drove, Martin took the opportunity to take in the beauty that was the northern Oregon coast. Soon enough, they’d be passing through Cannon Beach with its magnificent haystack rocks.

“Are we staying over somewhere?”

“Maybe.”

They were, then; that was great. Martin found he enjoyed spying on what other small resorts and places like theirs offered.

Nick flicked the blinker, turning onto a side road.

“What is this?”

Nick slowed further and took a left into a driveway. A posted sign welcomed them to Norwegian Wood.

“Don’t ask me why it’s called that, I don’t know,” Nick said before Martin opened his mouth. They continued up the drive, eventually parking by an old barn and house that looked heavily repurposed. In the field next to the barn was a huge white canvas.

Not a canvas, Martin realized. It was a screen.

“Is this an outdoor movie theater?”

Nick grinned and nodded. “Yes, and the restaurant is supposed to be five stars. They serve mostly salmon and steak. We have reservations so we can eat before the movie.”

“What movie?”

Nick’s grin grew wider.

“Tango and Cash. The best buddy cop movie of all time.”

Martin couldn’t help but return his grin—even if he was wrong.

“There’s a nine-hole golf course too. We could do something like that at home.” Nick’s eyes grew wide. “But what if we made it a kitschy putt-putt course with Sasquatches and Kraken? Something parents would think was fun too.”

Nick climbed out of the car, pocketing the keys. “Did I tell you it’s a double feature with22 Jump Street?”

Martin met Nick’s excited gaze over the top of the car and saw he was still smiling. Who would’ve predicted this Nick Waugh was hidden underneath all the natural grumpiness? Mind, Martin was pretty much the only one who ever saw this side of Nick—and that was just fine with him.

“You seriously thinkTango and Cashis better than22 Jump Street?”
