Spencer nodded. “Has anything else been brought to your attention today or at all?”

Langston informed the Chief about the hackers monitoring Lisa’s computer and the Jeep that followed them both recently.

“It’s definitely them.”

Langston gritted his teeth. “Why would they be following her?”

“Because she’s with you.”

Langston stared at Spencer. “No,” he whispered.

“Don’t try to send her somewhere safe. She’s already a target. If they were following her when she was alone, they know her routine. The best way to keep her out of harm’s way is to keep her here with you.”

“Fuck.” Langston rolled his sleeves up to his elbows and braced his hands on his hips. “I need to make some calls and cancel my attendance at the gala.”

“That’s not a good idea.”

Langston frowned. “Why not?”

“You should keep doing what you would normally do. The people watching you will react faster if they think you’re alerting anyone. They need to see you at peace within yourself, unbothered by their threat. The leader is a menace; he’s already shown himself by following you two. He’ll do it again, and when he does, we can catch him.”

Langston heard what his boss was saying, but he didn’t like it. His gut churned.

Spencer removed his phone and dialed a number.

“Yes, this is an encrypted line. Deputy Director, we have a problem.”

The next day

“Is everything okay?”

Lisa watched Langston as he stood in his bar room, staring out the window. He turned, his gaze moving from her face to her high-heeled shoes and back again.

The look made Lisa squirm, and silence clung between them as she stood there waiting for a response.

“What a beauty you are,” his husky timbre drawled.

Heat bloomed on her cheeks, and she blushed. “Thank you. You are looking gorgeous yourself.”

Langston smirked and looked down at himself. “This little ol’ thing,” he murmured, and she laughed.

“Sure, sure, as if I don’t know it’s a tailored, expensive piece. I know Brioni when I see it.”

He winked and strolled to her. “This gown is putting me in the mood to hold you hostage right here.”

The purple dress she wore hugged her curves and sparkled with every sway. A smile eased across her lips. “I love it when you say things like that to me.”

“Do you?”

“Yes.”

He dropped kisses on her forehead, the bridge of her nose, and her lips.

“But still, I can’t help but wonder if something is bothering you.”
