“Do I appear restless?”

“A little.”

He took in a deep breath. “I apologize. Sometimes I can be no fun. I have work on my mind. But I’m determined to have some fun tonight with you.”

Lisa’s smile faded as she heard the concern in Langston’s voice. She was relieved that his unease wasn’t about their relationship. Still, she knew better than to push him too hard when he was in this state of mind, but she couldn’t shake off the sense of doubt that had been creeping up on her all day.

“I know you’ll have a good time tonight,” she said, trying to sound convincing. “You’re with me.”

Langston chuckled. “Always the charmer, Lisa.” He looked at his watch. “We should get going if we don’t want to be late.”

Lisa nodded, taking one last look at herself in the mirror. She knew she looked stunning, but that wasn’t the only reason she was going to the Chic Gala. It was an event that could potentially make or break her career.

Being a part of Genesis Rising had been a dream come true, but it was no secret that the music industry was cutthroat, and Lisa wanted to make sure they stayed on top.

The Drake Hotel

They arrived at the event, and the red carpet was already buzzing with photographers and reporters. Lisa felt a flutter of nerves in her stomach as she stepped out of the car, but Langston’s hand in hers gave her the confidence she needed. They posed for pictures, and Lisa answered a few questions about Genesis Rising’s upcoming album before they made their way inside.

As they walked into the ballroom, Lisa felt a surge of excitement mixed with anxiety. She looked around at the elegantly dressed crowd mingling amongst each other, sipping drinks and nibbling on hors d’oeuvres. She felt nervous about the upcoming performance but was determined to make it a success.

Langston gripped her hand gently, sensing her apprehension, and led her toward their table. “You’re a star. Remember that.”

She smiled at him. “Thank you.”

He winked.

“Can you believe we made it inside without being questioned about being together tonight?” she asked.

“I’m sure we’ll make the news tomorrow.”

Lisa’s eyes widened. “You’re not lying. Did you see the newspaper picture of us?”

“Of course I did.”

Lisa cringed. She knew Langston didn’t want a relationship, and she had Destiny to blame.

Langston lifted her hand to his mouth and kissed the back of it. “We appeared cozy. I remember the moment like it was yesterday. My time with you has healed me in ways you don’t know.”

She smiled, relieved. “Really?”

He smirked. “Yes, really.”

Lisa gazed at him a moment more before spotting her bandmates, Tina and Chelsea, already seated at the table, chatting with other guests. They looked up and smiled, waving her over to join them.

As they approached the table, Tina leaned in and whispered, “Did you see some of these outfits? I thought this was a fashion event.”

Lisa chuckled. “Well, we can’t all be winners.”

“True that.”

Langston leaned and whispered in Lisa’s ear. “I’ll be back,mi amour.”

“Okay.”

He caressed her shoulder as he left, and she watched him approach his mother, who was speaking to a woman in the middle of the room.
