“Before you get comfortable sitting, you might want to grab your partners and head to the dance floor because Genesis Rising is in the building! Please give a warm welcome to the trio destined to bring us closer tonight—Genesis Rising!”

The crowd erupted in applause, and the girls made their way to the stage.

Nineteen

Langston

Langston clapped and watched as Genesis Rising took to the stage. The crowd was jumping to the tunes, with couples colliding on the dance floor, grooving to the music.

“To make this fun,” the announcer said into the mic, “Every few seconds, switch dancers to keep the party going!”

Applause rose into the air, and Langston smiled brightly, his gaze falling on his mother, who was dancing with his father.

Langston’s gut tightened. A few couples away was Fredrick’s fiancée, and she was far too interested in Fredrick’s and Cynthia’s dance than she was in the person in front of her.

Rising to his feet, Langston moved his hips in a groove as he shuffled over to his mother. He took her by the hand when the couple switched and twirled her in his arms.

“Oh, well, if it isn’t my lovely son.”

Langston’s smile stretched across his face. “I wanted to show you how those dancing classes paid off.”

Laughter consumed Cynthia. “Is that right?”

“And maybe I wanted to save you from...Dad.”

Cynthia nodded. “Your dad has always had two left feet anyway. It was him that needed the lessons more than you boys.”

Langston chuckled.

“But besides that, thank you for the steal. Now when you hand me off, keep it to the right so I can get as far away from him as possible.”

Langston kissed her forehead. “It’ll be my pleasure, Mom.”

They switched, and Cynthia ended up in her other son’s arm, Malik Anthony Clark, while Langston danced with a woman who was five feet in height, even in her stilettos.

“Hi,” she said coyly.

“Hello.” He twirled her and heard his mother laughing at Malik’s words.

“Wow. You are the best dancer I’ve had so far.”

Langston’s brows rose. “You think so?”

“Without a doubt,” she said, following his lead. “The last guy had two left feet.”

Langston suppressed a grin as he knew the partner she referenced was his father. “You know, the last pretty lady said the same thing.”

The woman looked at his mother and laughed heartily. “So, it’s not just me, then?”

“I don’t think so.”

He twirled her off and easily transitioned into a groove with the next lady, but when his eyes landed on Destiny Frankfort, his heart slammed in surprise, tightened, and pained all at once.

“Hi,” she said.

His gaze shuffled around the venue as he danced silently, keeping his head on straight.

“Langston, I know you’re mad at me, but we should talk. Nothing about ignoring me is healthy.”
