Lisa laughed nervously, glancing over her mother’s shoulder at her father, who was stopped in conversation.

“You’re right. I’ve been so busy.”

“Too busy to call your mother?”

“Well, yes.”

Mr. Sharpton approached. “Hey, hey, hey.” He drew Lisa in for a hug and nodded in greeting at everyone at the table. “It’s nice to finally see you in, what? Six months?”

Lisa pursed her lips. “Dad, don’t overexaggerate.”

“Okay, three months.”

“Give or take a month,” Mrs. Sharpton added.

Lisa shook her head and smiled. “You two are something else.”

A tall figure moved into their section. “Excuse me.” Langston took his eyes over the group, nodding politely.

Heat slapped Lisa’s skin. She wanted Langston to meet her parents differently, not via a cornered surprise.

“Langston, this is my mother and father, Mr. and Mrs. Sharpton. Mom and Dad, this is Langston Jamal Clark, my date.”

Langston held out a hand to Mrs. Sharpton. “I see where your daughter gets her beauty from.” He covered her hand with his other. “It’s nice to meet you, Mrs. Sharpton.”

Mrs. Sharpton was too busy giggling at Langston’s compliment to respond, and she stared at him like she’d never seen a man so gorgeous.

“Mr. Sharpton.” Langston released Mrs. Sharpton’s hand and offered it to her husband. The two shook firmly.

“Langston, it’s nice to meet you. I haven’t spoken with my daughter in a while. Our schedules conflict, but it’s good to meet who she’s dating in the flesh for the first time.”

“No, Dad. No. We’re not dating; we’re—”

“You just said he was your date, is that not dating?”

“Ah, well...”

“Sweetheart,” Langston peered at Lisa. “Are we not dating?”

Lisa’s whole body lit up with heat, her eyes jumping between Langston’s and her father’s eyes.

“That’s what I said, isn’t it?”

“You didn’t seem so sure at first.” Mr. Sharpton added.

“I’m sure.” She smiled tightly, but her gut was in knots. At any moment, she felt as if she might fart from nervousness.

Langston’s smile was calm, but his grip on Lisa’s hand tightened in support. “We’re just taking things slow, Mr. Sharpton. I think it’s important to establish a foundation before diving into something serious.”

Lisa’s father studied Langston for a moment before nodding thoughtfully. “I can respect that. And please, call me Robert.”

Langston nodded back. “Of course, Robert. It’s nice to meet you both.”

Lisa felt the tension in her shoulders ease slightly as Langston conversed with her parents. His charisma and charm knew no bounds, and she couldn’t help but feel grateful to have him by her side.

They were interrupted by the sound of the host making an announcement. “Ladies and gentlemen, you all are looking beautiful tonight—wow! Give yourselves a round of applause.”

Cheers went up in a storm of excitement, and everyone took their seats.
