Langston laughed. “There’s someone for everyone.”

“Your love language is clearly touch.”

He bit his bottom lip. “Yeah? How do you know?”

She twisted her lips. “Do you have to ask?”

He chuckled. “Okay. You got me there. I would say communication is yours.”

She wiggled her brows. “How do you know?”

“You call me a lot and text when you don’t.”

She gasped and covered her mouth. “Am I a bugaboo?”

He laughed and shook his head. “No. I apologize if it sounded that way. I enjoy your communication. It’s fine.” He lifted her hand and kissed the back of it.

The phone vibrated in his pocket. “Damn, I forgot to turn the ringer back on this thing.”

He lifted it and answered quickly when he saw Spencer’s cell. “Boss?”

“Whatever you do, get out of the car; a unit is on the way to get you and Ms. Sharp. You need to come in immediately. We received an email fifteen minutes ago. Arm yourself.”

The partitionto their SUV rolled down, and their driver yelled, “Mr. Clark!” Coughing, he slumped, unconscious, as white gas seeped through the vents.

“What the fuck?” Langston’s eyes widened when he saw the smoke. “Hold your breath!” The truck swerved and ran into a pole on the side of the road, and Langston grabbed Lisa and pulled her out of the car.

“What’s going on!” she shouted, eyes wide.

Langston removed his Glock and searched for his phone, only to acknowledge that he’d lost it somewhere between the shuffle.

“Damn it.”

“Langston?!”

Three SUVs flew down the state road in the distance. Unfamiliar vehicles that Langston knew did not belong to his unit.

He gritted his teeth and turned to Lisa. “Whatever happens, stay behind me.”

“Do you have another gun?”

His brows dipped, and he removed a second gun from his ankle holster and placed it in her hand. “Do you know how to use this?”

“Hell, yeah.”

He nodded. “Still, stay behind me. I know you, Lisa. Don’t get brave.”

The SUVs blocked them in, and the doors opened. Three sets of men jumped out, dressed in black and armed with semiautomatic weapons, and took aim.

Langston didn’t wait for them to shoot. Taking aim, he shot the first three in their hands, and their weapons hit the ground with them. Before he took out the next three, a red dot was aimed at his chest.

“I think you know that pulling this trigger will take both of you down.”

Langston hesitated. The voice speaking was reminiscent of the voice from the video. Chills trickled across his skin, and he locked his jaw. The man knew Langston well enough to know he would die protecting his country, but his love for Lisa would make him hesitate.

“Now that I have your attention…”
