Page 68 of Dying Without You

Moans from the injured men on the ground drew their leader’s attention as he glared at them with disgust. “Shut the fuck up!” He snapped his fingers. “Get them the fuck out of here!”

The last set of men moved into action, grabbing the wounded men, and shoving them roughly back in the SUV. The driver pulled away, leaving two SUVs and two more groups of three men each.

“What the fuck do you want?” Langston barked.

“You know what I want, and honestly, I thought better of you, Mr. Clark.”

“I can’t give you what you asked for, and you know it.”

“Why? I haven’t even told you my plans for it.”

“Thewhydoesn’t matter.”

He smirked. “Okay. Then I’ll take what I want. Get the fuck in the truck.”

“No.”

The man’s brow twitched. “I’m not going to ask you again.”

A short distance away, Langston saw the outline of SUVs racing down the highway. Those were his men, his unit. He just needed to stall a bit longer.

“Tell me why.”

The man smirked. “Do you take me for an idiot?”

Langston didn’t respond, and the man turned to his gunman. “Get her.”

They approached, and Langston fired more shots.

Lisa lifted her gun and dropped a man to his knees.

Not fast enough.

A bullet from one of the assailants slammed into Langston’s chest.

“Nooooooo!”

“Don’t kill him you idiots we need him alive!” The leader yelled.

Lisa turned to Langston as he dropped. “Nooooo!Langston!”

Two men grabbed her arms and dragged her away as Langston’s world went dark.

Twenty-Two

Lisa

The soft bag was yanked off Lisa’s head, and her unfocused eyes opened to a dark room. Blurred images of others in the space made her stiffen, and as she blinked, they came into focus: Destiny Frankfort and Cynthia Clark.

Lisa gasped as shock and fear settled in her soul. Her hands were released, and still, in a state of fight or flight, she whirled, kicked the guy in the balls, and grabbed for his gun.

“Aaaaah!” The man screamed and wept, bent over double in pain. Another one of her captors walked around him, raised his hand, and slapped Lisa to the ground.

Dizziness hit her like a ton of bricks. As the man bent over and spoke in a language unknown to her, she shoved her foot high and kicked him in the balls, too.

The second man dropped to his knees as the first limped over and removed his weapon, lowering it to aim at her head.

“No!” Cynthia shouted.
