The man turned the gun to her, and Destiny remained quiet, shaking in the corner.

“That’s enough,” the leader barked, entering the room.

The men spoke back and forth in their language, but the end came out in English. “We need them alive, you idiot. Especially her.”

The leader glared at Lisa. “You’ve got guts, I’ll give you that. But you’ve also got a death wish, so let me tell you how this will go. There’s no way to escape from here. We’re thirty miles from the nearest gas station. Before you think about running, understand that you’ll have to get through the gunfire from an army of bullets to make it to the front door.”

His steely gaze darkened. “And the reason I’ve got all three of you is just in case one of you might be stupid enough to try it.” He shrugged. “It’ll leave me with other bargaining chips if I have to put one of you down. Do you understand, Lisa?”

Hearing him speak her name made her recoil, but she didn’t respond, only stared at him in silence.

He snorted contemptuously and rose to his feet, then spoke in his language, commanding the others to follow him. They left the room, and he looked back at Lisa with a leering gaze as his face was still covered with a mask.

“Try me, Lisa. You’ll be the first to witness my truth.” He paused. “Actually, you’ll be the second. Your boy toy was the first. He ignored my direct order, so you have him to thank for your situation.”

“He’s not responsible for you being a psychopath,” she muttered.

The man laughed. “I like you. I should put that mouth of yours to work.”

She cringed, and he strolled to the door.

“You won’t get away with this. Langston will come for us.”

“Oh, I’m banking on it. We need him, and if it had not been for his backup, we would have him like we have you.”

He shut the wooden door, and a latch could be heard locking on the outside.

“Oh, my God!” Cynthia ran to Lisa’s side and drew her into her arms. “Please don’t make them mad, Lisa. I’d die if something happened to you. Please!”

Lisa sucked in a deep breath. Her mind whirled with what was happening. She tried to put together pieces of a broken puzzle.

Did these guys have anything to do with the hackers? What did they want?

“Whatever they want, it must be important for them to take us all,” Lisa said.

“Did you hear what I just said?” Cynthia whispered sharply.

Lisa took in Cynthia’s appearance. She was a mess, hair tousled and eyes red and swollen from crying. Despite the dire situation, she couldn’t help but feel guilty for getting the man to turn the gun on her because of fighting them. Still, Lisa had to think of a way out of this.

“Cynthia, listen to me. We must stay calm and think this through. There has to be a way out of here.”

“But how can you think like that? They have guns, Lisa. Guns!”

Lisa knew that Cynthia was right, but she couldn’t sit and wait it out. What was on the end of this situation for them? Would they just let them go?

Lisa feared they wouldn’t. Regardless of their fate, she wanted to at least try to fight back and get free.

Destiny whimpered from the corner, clutching her knees to her chest. Lisa looked over at her, confused about why they took her.

“We’re getting out of here. All three of us.” Lisa tried to infuse bravery and hope into her voice.

Destiny looked at Lisa with wide, fearful eyes. “How? They have guns. They have...they have everything. You’re going to get us killed.”

“They’re going to kill us anyway.”

A sharp gasp flew from Cynthia, and Destiny began to cry.

Lisa regretted her words as soon as they left her mouth. She had to stay strong for these two women—for all their sakes. She glanced around the room, searching for anything they could use to defend themselves.
