Langston glanced up at Malik standing in the doorway. He strolled inside, sat on Langston’s bed, and leaned back, closing his eyes as he spoke.

“We are participating in whatever you’re planning, end of story.”

Langston smirked. “I’ve been instructed to come alone.”

“Sure you have. That doesn’t mean you’re going alone.”

“Lisa—”

“Is going to be rescued, with me and Tristan by your side.”

Silence filled the space. “What if…”

“I can tell you’re extremely worried about her. You’ve never second-guessed yourself so much.”

“Her life is in my hands.”

“Then she’s in good hands.”

Langston sighed. “With all the threats we’ve experienced, none have reached this close to home. I didn’t prepare for this, and for that, I feel I shouldn’t hold the position as executive assistant director of cybersecurity operations. To have such a high ranking and fail at something so basic as security coverage for my family is idiotic.”

Malik opened his eyes and glanced at his brother. “You’re serious?”

Langston only stared at Malik, and Malik exhaled a deep breath.

“No one can be prepared for this unless you’ve experienced it before. Then the next time, you’ll know better and be one step ahead.”

“We have codes. So technically, you, Tristan, and I were prepared. When the ladies were threatened by your enemy, your first thought was to send out our shared code. Tristan didn’t take his eyes off Chelsea. But I lost Lisa. I let her slip right through my fingers.” Langston shook his head. “Pathetic.” He dropped his head into his hands.

“I see what you’re doing.”

“I’m telling the truth.”

“You’re blaming yourself when you were outmanned and outgunned. You were shot. You could’ve died. You went down fighting for her. And according to Mom, Lisa was fighting back after they took her, too. You two are perfect for one another. The blame game doesn’t work for this scenario, so don’t say that again.”

“How am I going to get her back?”

“You’re not.”

Shocked, Langston lifted his eyes to his brother.

“We are,” Malik said.

Langston sighed, and a shadow covered them as Tristan entered the space.

“Yes, we are,” he said. “Now tell us how we do it.”

Langston glanced at the two and bit his bottom lip. He spent some time thinking over the circumstances, and the brothers remained silent until he spoke.

“They want me to come alone. When Lisa and I were approached, the leader had nine other men with him. If we assume the leader will be someone hiding at the cafe, then we must assume he’ll have enough protection and an escape route should his plans go awry. But he’s relying on the condition that I’ll follow his instructions because he’s still got the women.”

He thought a second more. “I need a double.”

His face showing confusion, Tristan spoke up. “Like a stunt double?”

“Yes. The window of opportunity is between the time the leader and his men leave their location and then arrive at the cafe to pick me up. During that time, you and our team will head to the location where they’re holding Lisa and Destiny. That location will be very lightly manned because they don’t think we know where it is, and we can move in quickly. If we meet gunfire, we’ll give them hell.”

Malik smirked, nodding. “Now that’s what the fuck I’m talking about.”
