Three Days Later

These last few days have been interesting.

Zoey and I are trying to get to know each other’s little quirks as best we can before this wedding in eight days. But I must admit it’s fun getting to know her and Hailee. I haven’t been over every night, but when I go to their house, Hailee seems excited to see me, and I always get amped up to see her too.

She’s so much fun.

Who knew a seven-year-old could make me enjoy life so much again?

It’s almost like I was drifting before.

Get up—work, eat, sleep—repeat.

What kind of a life is that?

Now with having Zoey and Hailee as a part of my daily routine, I have something, someone to look forward to spending the evenings with. I know it’s only been a few days, but I have known Zoey for a while and could quickly get used to this.

And that’s fucking scary.

Because when this fake-dating thing ends, does my time with them also end?

I have no clue.

All I know is I don’t want it to.

Making my way up to Zoey’s front door, cupcakes in hand, I ring the doorbell with a bright smile, waiting for Zoey to answer.

The door swings back, and Kyle is standing there with a smug-ass look.

My grin instantly falls as I crane my neck to the side. “Kyle,” I greet him, clear disdain in my tone.

“Daddy! We’re not done with the game yet,” Hailee calls out, running down the hall and slamming into her father’s legs, embracing him tight.

“Hey, pumpkin, I’ll be there in a minute. Just letting Brad in.”

Grinding my teeth together, I flare my nostrils. “It’s Blake.”

He narrows his eyes on me, the corner of his lips turning up in an annoying smirk. “I know.”

“Daddy, c’mon!” Hailee chimes, tugging on his shirt.

He chuckles, turning for Hailee and ruffles her hair. “All right, baby girl, let’s destroy this dance floor.” He widens the front door, so I can walk inside, then turns to head off down the hall.

The fact Hailee hasn’t even acknowledged I’m here hurts. I thought we were buddies. But she takes off, skipping with her father into the living room as I close the door behind me.

Well, that sure put me in my damn place.

Clearing my throat, I walk down the hall into the kitchen and spot Zoey at the breakfast bar. She smiles when she looks up. She’s making some kind of meal as I approach with the box of cupcakes. She glances at Hailee and Kyle, who are dancing up a storm in the living room, completely ignoring me.

I place the box on the counter and let out a sigh. “Didn’t know Kyle was going to be here tonight.”

Zoey slumps her shoulders, her eyes dropping as she stirs the pot. “Neither did I. My mother was going to watch her, but she and my father came down with a stomach bug, so I had no one else to sit with her while we head out to this event at Revel Rose tonight for Nash. I was going to pull out, but then I thought if Nash has invited me, it might be an announcement about the business, and I should be there.”

I know what he’s announcing, but I can’t spill the beans. “We could have taken Hailee with us. I’m pretty sure Lucas is bringing Jackson.”

Zoey groans. “I never thought of that. I panicked. I just wanted to make sure I could be there. I don’t get invited to work events that often, so when I do, I want to ensure I can go. I should have talked to you first.”

“It’s fine. Hailee is having fun, and that’s all that matters.”
