“I-I’ll think about it.”

“I can’t help you until you give in and realize that we are one soul for all eternity. Until one of us dies. And then the other one will follow along right behind. Our destinies are twined together and cannot be separated.”

He stands up and I see his muscles flex and bunch as he shifts awkwardly on his feet. I growl when my dragon stirs inside me, her attention already shifting to the man in front of me.

I can see through her all-seeing eyes and I see an aura of barely-restrained need around him.

“Leave the amulet up here, little mate. And then come to me when you’re ready to work because there is a lot to do to get ready for the demons.”

I’m so shocked by his apparent acceptance that I’m still leery of these feelings lurching through my belly like violent flames.

“I’ll be down soon.” It’s like I can’t stop myself. I need to do this. It’s inevitable.

It’s destiny.

SAAR

Ican feel her hesitating on the stairs and I know why. She’s still worried about me. But I also feel that the magic inside her is stronger, straining against the leash that her dragon has placed on it.

The dragon is in control right now but not by much. “Come downstairs to me, Serenity.” I call to her and almost expect her to turn back around and run back to her room.

She doesn’t.

My lips quirk up mirthlessly. “Time to work, little one.”

She steps into the room and stares around at it. I didn’t bring her in here last night.

The room is large and airy, glass all around us, bringing the light of the sun and the surrounding woods into the room. Light white metal furniture is scattered around the huge room. There are numerous throw pillows glittering with precious metals and stones on the soft dove gray cushions. It’s rich and gleaming with opulence.

My family has owned this house for centuries. It’s been the home base for us for as long as we needed it.

Some family members leave but they always seem to come back here. It’s like the life force of our family’s history lives inside these walls.

She runs her slender fingers across the pillows, gasping at the glowing jewels. There’s probably a fortune in semi-precious stones on those pillows. That means nothing to me. Their true gift is in the way that they control the powers of our family. The way they guide us and ground us. The way that they keep our loved ones safe and clear-headed in the face of anything that can be thrown at us.

“What is this room?” She whispers, her voice strained with awe.

“Does it matter?”

“It feels like it does.”

“Come in and see.”

“This room feels full of energy and power.”

My heart lifts when I realize that she recognizes the potential in this room.

“Can you feel the energy in this room?” I ask her, a little surprised. She has no control over her own powers. I wasn’t sure that she’d actually recognize it.

She nods her head, her bright hair glowing like fire in the sunlight. “I do. It’s like I can see hundreds of people living in the walls of this room.”

My brows lift. She’s much more attuned to her surroundings than I thought she’d be.

“My ancestors have lived in this home for centuries. It’s hidden from prying eyes but Magic was built over the last hundred years and its supernatural residents hide it as well. This whole area is a sanctuary to our kind.”

“Is that why you live here?”

I shake my head. “No. This has always been a magical place. The woods and mountains around here hold power unlike anything I’ve ever felt before. I imagine that when my ancestors came here that they felt it as well. That’s why they stopped here and built this place.” My hand waves around the room.
