“I am awake, Saar.”

He peeks around the door and I smirk. “I didn’t want to just break into the room, not knowing what you were doing.”

“I’m fine, Saar.”

He grunts and then darts back out into the hall, making my eyebrows lift in surprise.

Then the heavy door is shoved open all the way and he pushes a brass cart into the room.

“What is this?” I ask.

“Breakfast in bed for my lovely mate.” I feel a lurch in my heart and then it flutters wildly.

“That’s very sweet, Saar. But what about you?”

He shrugs broad shoulders and lifts a pot of tea up towards me, smiling when I nod my head.

“I already ate hours ago. I didn’t sleep very well.”

“Oh no! I’m so sorry. What kept you awake?”

“I dreamt of you, dragon.”

Why on earth were we both dreaming about each other in the middle of the night?

“That’s not good.” I take a sip of the hot tea and groan. He comes closer to me and my body heats up to boiling just being near him. Seeing the darker gold flecks in his icicle blue eyes.

“Itisgood, mate. I would gladly spend every night chasing you in my dreams.”

“And you chased me in your dreams last night?”

“I did.” His blue eyes glance at me uncertainly and it tugs at my heart when I see how uncomfortable he is. He’s like a little boy caught out in a white lie.

“It’s okay. I know what you mean.”

He sits the tray across my lap and I grin at the assortment of food on it. Slices of orange, apple and grapefruit sitting in a large bowl. A heaping plate of fluffy scrambled eggs and crispy bacon with perfectly-toasted bread slathered with butter and strawberry preserves that glisten ruby-red.

“This all looks yummy but I don’t think I can eat all this. Are you sure that you’re not hungry? I’d hate to waste it all.”

He smiles and his eyes dart away. “It’s no big deal if you can’t eat it all. It’s not like I would make you clean your plate. But you should eat as much as you can. We have much to do today.”

I take a big bite of the toast and cock my head to the side, chewing slowly, savoring the yummy preserves. They taste home-made.

“What do you mean? What must we do today?”

“So much. I still want to get to know you better is number one. Number two is that I want to start to check out your powers and we need to talk about the destiny that’s coming for us.”

I take a deep breath, shivering when it feels like something creeps across my skin.

“Yes. I guess we need to get that out of the way.”

He stares at my throat, clearing his. “I hesitate to ask this of you but I really need you to leave the necklace up here, leave it off today.”

“I still don’t know why this is so important to you but I’ve never taken this necklace off in all of my eighteen years. My aunt gave it to my mother when I was born. She used to wear one of her own. It was a dragon.”

I wonder why she stopped wearing it.

He smiles slightly. “She stopped wearing it because she had a dragon to protect her. She didn’t need the amulet.”
