“You do?”

“He’s not like Dad.”

I cross my arms. “Raffi, don’t start comparing people.”

“He was nice to Matty, and to me. So definitely, he’s not like Dad. If I could choose my own father, I’d choose him.”

“Raffi…”

“He’s a pilot, he plays basketball, and he’s kind. He let you borrow his car without knowing how you drive.”

“Hey, I’m a good driver.”

Raffi shrugs.

“I am!”

“She is, Raffi,” Thomas supports me. “You should’ve seen how my mother used to drive. Now,shewas a terrible driver.”

“Anyway.” I put my arm around Raffi. “Don’t think about Dad anymore, okay? What he did to you was wrong. But we have a new life now.”

“Sorry.” Raffi kisses me on the cheek. “I love you, Mom.”

“Love you too.”

“I’ll see you later!” Raffi heads upstairs to his room.

Thomas and I stay in the living room. I open a bottle of wine for us and the box of chocolates from Clayton.

“Do you know when Don is coming back?”

“Tomorrow,” Thomas confirms, chewing on the chocolate. “Gee, this is good. And he’ll be coming home pissed.”

Jesus, I’m not looking forward to it.

“Any chance he’s falling in love again soon?”

“Who do you think I am? His matchmaking agent?” Thomas then leans back, his hand pressing at his temple.

“What’s wrong with you today?” I query his unusual moodiness.

“Randy wants us to get back together.”

“No, not again!” I make my stance. “Don’t entertain him. He left you, and you weren’t yourself when you were with him.”

“I know.”

“You’ll find someone else. A man who isn’t in it just for the good time. You want someone who takes care of you as much as you do him.”

“With Don shadowing me, I’m not that optimistic. We really need—”

A pair of headlights shine into the room.

“Shit! He’s early!” I grumble at the disaster arriving at my gate.

Don enters without even knocking. “Thomas, leave us,” he orders.

“I’ll be fine,” I tell my bestie. “Go.”
