Thomas’ prediction on Don was spot on. The bastard is angry. Once we’re alone, he throws himself at me and starts touching me.

“Not here, Don! Raffi is upstairs.”

“You smell different,” he sneers as his foul breath smears my face.

“Just tell me what you want.”

“What happens to ‘Welcome back, Don. How are you, Don?’ Huh?”

“Since when do you expect niceties from me?”

He chuckles cunningly. After studying me like there’s an entire island missing from a map, he sneers, “Clayton Hartley.”

My gut tightens, and my fingers tingle with nervousness. Don already knows about Clayton and me, but for him to say his name in front of me, I fear for what’s to come.

“What about him?” I deadpan.

“Sit down.”

I do as he says, and he keeps his vicious eyes on me. He lets silence linger, playing with my psyche. Finally, he discloses his demand, “I want you to pursue him. Or at least entertain his pursuit.”

“Why?”

“I need something from him, and you’ll get it for me.”

“And what is that?”

“I’ll let you know. For now, gain his trust if you haven’t already. Then, when the time comes, I don’t care what you do. Seduce him, drag him to Dungeon East, put a knife to his balls—I don’t care, as long as you get me what I need.”

I stay quiet.

“Bear his child if you must.”

I pant in anger.

He laughs. “We both know that’s not gonna happen. Well, didn’t the doctors say so? But hey, you can fantasize.”

“Fuck you!”

“Watch your mouth!”

I let his warning pass me by. “Once I get what you want from Hartley, set Raffi and me free.”

“Negotiating, are we?”

“Stop giving me shit, Don. You’ve been controlling me because you have all the cards. But Hartley isn’t stupid. I need to know that I’ll get something out of it, and only then will I try my best. No half measures.”

“You know what will happen if you betray me, don’t you? Have you seen what I included in your criminal record? I mean, Isabelli Martins’ record? The NYPD uses my software, Iz. I have full access to it. I can do anything to it.”

“It was self-defense.”

“You’ve never wanted to challenge me all this time, for a good reason. If you’re smart, you’ll keep it that way.”

I know he has the power to manipulate anything, and Raffi is still the main card he’s holding. But what he’s asking of me is almost beyond my capability.

“You killed your boyfriend in cold blood. And it’s only me who can keep that record buried.”

“What will I get out of it, Don?”
