Stepping back, I adjusted myself. “Write me a list of your enemies and I’ll look into who hurt you.”

“Well, that will be easy.” She shook her head as she watched my hand on my dick. “My total is zero unless you count.”

I gritted my teeth together. Why was she so insubordinate? “If it was me, I wouldn’t be offering to find him.”

Her head tilted to the side, making her long blonde hair cascade over her shoulder. “How do you know it’s a guy?”

She had a good point, but deep in my gut, somehow, I knew. “It’s not a girl’s style. They’re much more meticulous and diabolical. If a girl wanted you dead, you’d be dead. Now, do you want my help or not?”

Payton shuttered as she looked up at me. “I really have no idea who it could be if it’s not you,” she said in the softest of whispers.

“Again, it’s not me.”

“I’m starting to see that. What I don’t understand is why you want to help me.”

When was she going to learn to start listening to me?

“If anyone is going to hurt you, it’s going to be me.”

“Wow,” she skirted around me, trying to give me a wide berth. “What are you, some type of psychopath or something?”

“Or something. Now, if anyone gives you any shit or someone comes to mind that you think has the potential to want you hurt, let me know.”

“The only one giving me any problems is you and your crew.”

“Which one is giving you problems?” I swore I would rip whoever’s insides out. They all knew to leave Payton alone. Was I losing my touch? First, Payton doesn’t seem fazed by me and now one of the guys.

“Are you kidding me right now? You sent your friend to my house where he all but practically begged for me to attend that so-called party.”

“I had nothing to do with that, but I will make sure it never happens again.” Although I couldn’t say I wasn’t happy Linc had brought her. If he hadn’t, I never would have gotten to sink deep inside of Payton’s sweet heat.

“If you’ll excuse me, I need to be on my way to class.”

There was no way in hell I was letting her go just yet. Stepping next to her, I walked beside Payton. She gave me the side eye that I was sure was supposed to make me want to step away, but all I thought was it was cute, which was something I wasn’t used to. “I’m headed that way myself.”

“Don’t remind me. How is it possible that in a school this big, I have three classes with you?” She huffed.

“I guess you’re just lucky.”

“Doubtful,” she muttered as we walked through the door. The second we were inside, Payton moved as far away from me as possible. Or at least she tried. I followed her like a lost puppy dog, loving how pissed off she was getting at not being able to get rid of me.

“Are you ashamed to be seen with me?” I laughed lowly. There was no way. I was the prize catch of the school. Hell, the entire town. She was lucky I was giving her any attention at all.

“I wouldn’t use the word ashamed, but no, I don’t want to be seen with you.” She stopped dead in her tracks and looked up at me. Her green eyes blazing. “Not that I have any friends in this god forsaken school, but I’m never going to get one when all the girls hate me because you’re paying me even an ounce of attention.” Her hands went to her hips. “I don’t need this in my life.”

“What can I say? I’m not going to leave you alone. I find I quite like annoying you.” I smirked as we passed by a group of girls, and they gave Payton a death glare. They really didn’t like me giving her any sort of attention. Was it possible that it was one of them that hurt her?

Wrapping my arm around Payton’s shoulders, I turned to the residence in this hallway that were at their lockers. “In case you haven’t met her, this is Payton Rose. She’s new here and I want you to treat her like you’d treat me.” I narrowed my eyes at the group that were now watching us. Half were fascinated I was speaking to them, and the other half looked as if they wanted to kill Payton more. “If I get even an inkling that any one of you even looks at Payton wrong, you will have to deal with me. Is that understood?”

Their heads bobbed up and down in a wave.

“Spread the word to your friends. No one messed with Payton,” I growled the last part out, before spinning us both around and marched off the way we intended.

“How are you so fucking clueless?” Payton murmured as she tried to break from my hold.

Tightening my arm around her even more, I looked down at her. “What are you even talking about?”

“You just announced to the whole school not to mess with me because if they do, they’ll get special attention from you.”
