Another strike makes me scream again. The next one brings tears, and my body shakes uncontrollably.

“I’m sorry,” I sob on the fifth one. “Please stop…that hurts.” The one after that is harsher and I feel my nightgown ripping.

There are ten in total. She stays completely silent, keeping her focus on making me suffer.

I’m a sobbing mess by the time she’s done.

“You may let go of the bar.”

My fingers are stiff from holding the bar so tightly, and my shoulders hurt when I bring my arms down. I sniffle and run my forearm under my nose.

“May I go to bed, please?” I ask as I turn around to face her.

She throws her head back as she laughs at me. Her mocking tone is the last straw when she says, “Absolutely not. You know what happens when you’re a bad girl.”

I shake my head and more tears roll down my face. “But I…I admitted to it.”

She smiles wickedly at me and grabs a key she keeps around her neck. She takes the necklace off and opens a small door in the wall right next to me.

It leads to a tiny closet, barely the size of a grown human.

“No…” I take a step back, but her eyes snap to me.

“In.”

“Ms. Moore. Please,” I beg in a small voice. Instead of answering she grabs my upper arm and twists me around before pushing me in the closet. It’s so small that my arms graze both sides, and I know once she closes it it’ll be so tight I won’t be able to sit down or move my legs in any way.

“God forgives, Miss Stewart. But I don’t.”

There’s a loud bang as she slams the door in my face and locks it. My nose practically touches it. I’m stuck between four tiny walls with no way to move and a burning back that I could swear is bleeding.

And I’ll be here all night.

When the door opens, daylight blinds me. I put a hand in front of my face and squint my eyes. I haven’t slept, of course, despite the exhaustion and my eyes that kept closing on their own accord.

My back is still on fire, my naked feet aching to a point of no return, and my legs have turned to jelly. As soon as I try to take a step, I fall forward, and two pairs of hands catch my arms.

“Did you sleep well, Miss Stewart?” Sister Ivy sneers. “Because I slept like a baby.”

I cried all night, and my swollen eyes turn to her. It’s meant to be a deadly stare, but I doubt it has the effect desired, especially when I see her mocking smile.

They sit me on one of the chairs in front of Moore’s desk and my head falls forward. It takes all my might to lift it back up.

“Welcome back to the real world,” Moore smiles sardonically as she sits at her desk. “Are you ready to behave?”

I try to nod but my neck refuses. “Y-yes,” I slur. The exhaustion is unlike any other, my entire body is giving up on me. I know it when my eyes close on their own accord.

“Do you wish to go to bed now?”

“Please,” I add as I try to open my eyes, but my eyelids are so heavy. My head falls to the side, and when I try to bring it back, it rolls to the other side.

Moore snaps her fingers and I do my best to give her my attention.

“The rest of the punishment is that you won’t be allowed any food for the next twenty-four hours.”

My heart sinks but I have no way to react physically.

“Is that understood?”
