“Yes,” I croak.

I’m already starving from having spent all my energy on standing up all night, but I don’t care right now. I just want to take this gown off my back and crawl into bed.

You will leave soon.

You will leave soon.

You will leave so—

A loud cackle brings me out of my thought.

“Is that what you think?” Moore smiles as she wipes fake laughing tears off her cheeks. “That you’ll leave soon?”

Did I say that out loud?

My brows furrow, accentuating the headache pounding in my skull. “You can’t keep me once I graduate.”

“And you think that is soon?” She pouts and I see the mockery in her eyes.

“I’m sick of this place,” I rasp. “I want to go home.”

“You know how it works. Unless you get an A+ in your class with Mr. Hayes, I’m afraid you won’t be leaving anytime soon. Those are the rules. I don’t make them; I only enforce them.” The devilish smile on her face tells me how much she loves enforcing said rules.

“Just let me leave,” I whimper as a sob constricts my chest. “I just want to…just want to leave.”

Ignoring my please, she turns to her colleague. “Sister Ivy, please take the girl to her dormitories. She’s losing her mind. She’s excused for today. It’s not like it’ll change anything for her grades anyway.”

“Please,” I gasp as Sister Ivy drags me up the chair. “I can’t stay here…I can’t.”

“Come on, little girl,” Ivy says with a satisfaction I can’t stand. “Off to bed you go.”

She practically has to carry me there. The girls are all on their way out to morning prayer when my weight falls on the bed.

“Look” she taps a piece of clothing at the foot of my bed. “You have a new night gown. This one is all ripped at the back.”

But I don’t hear her, and I don’t care. She leaves and I turn to my side.

“Hales.” Even Katya’s soft voice as she caresses my matted hair doesn’t bring me peace.

I’m stuck. I’m completely stuck here for God knows how much longer.

“Your back,” my friend whimpers. It’s not the first time she sees me in this state the morning after staying in Moore’s office. “Let me help you out of this.”

I do. I let her help for a few minutes and get me in the new nightgown. She gives me some fresh water and I accept it gladly.

“You should go,” I rasp as I lay on my stomach. “You’ll get in trouble if you’re late.”

She nods and drops a kiss on my forehead. “I’ll see you tonight.”

My eyes close but I can’t sleep. I’m hungry and I know I won’t be allowed to eat until tomorrow morning.

I take in a shaky breath and swallow back my tears.

I need to find a way out of here.
