“Little one.” Grabbing her, I pull her into me and hold her. I feel the anxiety leaving her body as we hold each other. “I’m never leaving you. Even if I have to go somewhere, you can come with me as long as it isn’t work.”

“Can you quit?” she asks me, and I think about it.

“Is that what you want me to do?” Looking Jacqulin in her eyes, I see that she’s joking.

“Codependency is a bad thing, Germaine.” Yet, she doesn’t let go of me. Instead, she holds me tighter. “I’m ok with that if you are.”

Chuckling, I kiss her. “We will work it out. But you have me, alright? I’m not going anywhere. In fact, I want you to marry me.”

It’s not a question, and it’s ridiculous that I basically demanded it. Oh well, it’s whatever now. She beams a thousand-watt smile at me. “I always dreamed my lover would take me to Paris to get engaged, but I kind of like that you didn’t.”

Shit, now I feel bad, but I refuse to apologize for knowing what I want. Taking the box, I open it to reveal a two-carat princess cut diamond ring. Jacqulin gasps, and with an unsteady hand, takes the ring out of the box. “It’s beautiful.”

“Just like you, little one. Honestly, it would mean the world to me if you would do me the honor of being my wife.”

She’s bouncing back and forth on her knees as I slide the outrageous ring onto her finger. “Yes. Always yes. Forever and ever.” With a squeal, she hugs me as I kiss her. We may have a lot to get through, but we will do it together.

AUTHOR NOTE

Holy Cross was meant to be my redemption, but I messed things up again. Seems to be the only thing I’m good at.

I’m being sent away once more. All because my mother can’t handle me.

She’s convinced herself I’m the snake from Eve’s garden.

You’d think this would be easy. Living in a quiet town, with no mother and no trouble around for miles…

But the reality is so much worse.

Stuck in a deeply religious town with my ex and his preacher father, with nothing but my dark thoughts and betrayal to keep me company, it’s hardly surprising when I start being watched and ostracized again.

They think I’m a wolf, here to corrupt their lambs.
