“We need to talk,” he said, sitting on the sofa.

He’d been in her apartment several times when they’d been dating. She looked away, wishing she wasn’t remembering those dates. Those kisses. That wild and wonderful night.

“Now is not a good time. You can see my mother’s visiting.”

Mitzie walked by and Cath leaned over and scooped her up, glad to have something to do. Trace made her nervous.

“Unexpectedly?” he asked.

“Very. And she hasn’t a clue who you are except of course CEO of Signals, Inc. I don’t want her to know. At least not until we know how we’re going to handle things.”

Trace settled back in the cushions, his eyes narrowed slightly.

“And why is that?”

“My mother’s old-fashioned and would think that the man who got me pregnant should marry me to give the baby a name. That would sure play havoc with your I-don’t-want-to-marry stance, wouldn’t it? I don’t want her to know yet.”

“The whole world will know sooner or later,” he said.

“Not if I don’t tell anyone. I could say it was a one-night stand, which come to think about it, it was.”

“It was not.”

“We only did it once, Trace, what would you call it?”

“The culmination of a great relationship.”

“Which you ended quick enough after that night.”

Even knowing the reasons, she couldn’t entirely get rid of the hurt his defection had caused.

“Because I found out you worked for Signals, Inc. and I knew I’d be taking that company over,” he said again.

“Still, it was only once,” she repeated stubbornly.

“I’m sorry I hurt you, Cath, it wasn’t my intention,” he said softly.

She refused to look at him. She tried to ignore the ache in her heart that had been there since he had stopped returning her calls, stopped calling her. She thought he was so special, and he’d only been looking for a casual dating partner. She ran her hands down Mitzie’s soft fur.

Trace leaned forward, reaching for Cath’s hand.

“It wasn’t a one-night stand. There’s a difference between that and only making love one time.”

“Like we’re going to do it again?” she asked.

“The situation surrounding the baby will surface sooner or later,” he said, rubbing his thumb over the back of her hand.

The motion was mesmerizing. She could feel her insides warming up. Snatching her hand away, she pushed the chair back a few inches, trying to put distance between them. How could she still be susceptible to the man?

“We need to decide what we’re going to do about it,” he said.

“You must have decided what you want–you sure contacted an attorney fast enough. I saw one today. And she gave me lots of papers to look over, which present different options. I’ll try to see if we can work something out if your parents want a relationship with this grandchild.”

“What if I want a relationship with this child?” he asked.

She looked at him in amazement. It was the last thing she expected. And would that complicate matters.

“You won’t see much of the baby when I’m living in Brussels,” she said slowly, her heart beating faster. What if he put roadblocks in her way? Would he really want a relationship is this child?
