“So maybe you don’t move to Brussels.”

Cath felt as if she’d been slapped. She glared at him.

“I have worked long and hard for that promotion. You can’t deny it.”

He shrugged, his eyes glinting.

“Actually I could rescind the promotion.”

“Don’t you dare talk like that. Besides I would think you’d be glad to have the embarrassment several thousand miles away rather than in the same office day after day.”

“What embarrassment?”

“That your lover is having your baby and still hanging around.”

“So you’re the father of the baby,” Ginny said from the kitchen door.

Cath turned to her mother in horror.

“Mom! I didn’t want you to know. We’re still working things out,” she said.

“Seems to me the only thing needed to be worked out is how soon he will marry you,” Ginny said as she glared at Trace.

“Marriage is not an option,” Cath said quickly.

Trace looked at her and frowned.

“Are you speaking for me now?” he asked.

She looked back at him.

“Come on, Trace, you know that’s the last thing you want. You’ve already accused me of trying to trap you. You should be celebrating that I am not.”

She dumped the cat off her lap and stood.

Ginny looked at Trace.

“What do your parents think?”

He looked startled for a moment.

“A good question. I haven’t told them the news yet.”

“It’s too soon to tell anybody,” Cath said desperately. “The doctor didn’t guarantee I’ll carry this child to full-term. I don’t want anyone else to know yet. I couldn’t bear all the sympathy if I lose the baby before it’s born.”

Trace rose. “I believe this is something that Cath and I need to discuss on our own,” he said politely to her mother. Turning to her he said, “Maybe after dinner you’d feel up to a walk.”

No way!

“Maybe another day. I’m tired and I have a lot to think about after visiting the attorney this afternoon,” she said.

She was hardly dressed to go for a walk, and didn’t feel up to changing to suit Trace.

He glanced at the packet of papers on the sofa.

“You may have a lot to review but don’t even think about making any decisions without talking to me. I have a hectic week. Tonight was the only time I had available. I’ll come by at ten o’clock on Saturday morning. We can talk then.”

He said good-night and left the apartment.
