Prologue

“Every man makes one big mistake for a woman in his lifetime.”

Those were my father’s words to me. He had many wise words, but for some reason, that one stuck with me since the first time I heard it at eight years old. Eight-year-old me didn’t believe that it was true because eight-year-old me thought girls were annoying. But with every year, I accepted those words more and more.

My biggest fear was always those words. I didn’t know which woman was going to be the one, and I didn’t know when it was going to happen. My whole life was going to be filled with uncertainty. I was never going to feel truly safe.

I needed to get rid of it. I was an heir. I was supposed to be strong. I didn’t have the luxury to have a soft spot. I was going to be the Capo de Capi.

I was going to be the one to rule over the Five Families of New York.

Every night I prayed to get rid of my fears. Every night I prayed to forget.

I never forgot.

But I did get rid of my fears.

People called me Fearless because that was really me. I no longer feared for a woman to come into my life and to make a mistake for her. And it was because I already did.

When I was only nineteen.

Now it was time to fix that mistake.

Chapter 1

Gabriele

Russian club was looking crowded. Crowded with very special guests.

Good.

It was my first big job. I did kill people before. I killed people for our family since I was fourteen. I also tortured a lot of people but being in the center of a job was something else. Standing in a Russian club as one of the future five bosses of New York was something else. It gave me a rush like nothing had before.

Maybe it was stupid of my father to give me the job of sneaking inside, but it was proof of his trust in me. So, I was determined not to prove him wrong.

I stayed clear of people who might recognize me. I have never seen any Bratva member live until tonight, but they might have seen me in the tabloids like I have seen them.

It was the easiest thing to recognize their PakhanDimitri Smirnoff and his son Aleksei.

Aleksei Smirnoff was thirty-three years old, but he still hadn’t taken over his father’s place. People were thinking that it was going to happen soon, but they would be wrong. No one was going to leave this club alive tonight.

Not father.

Not son.

Luckily, they didn’t seem like they were going to leave soon. It was a good time to inform my father and have a smoke during it because even though I was good at what I did, I was anxious. Nineteen was not a young age for our circle, but it was still not an easy task to visit here as a Cosa Nostra heir.

A smoke would just solve all my problems.

I used the back door to get away without anyone seeing me. I took out a Marlboro and lit it before texting my father. It was going to take about fifteen minutes before they got in, and maybe it would be better if I stayed inside to check for a while longer, but my cigarette was very distracting. Also, I knew they were not going to go anywhere. The girl just blew the candles. They were going to congratulate her on her birthday before thinking about leaving.

“Fuck,” I heard someone murmured from the other side of the backdoor just when I was lost in my plans. When I turned my head, I saw her.

Speak of the devil.

Dark hid all her features and the color of her hair, but I had a chance to see her inside. Her hair was flaming red, and she was trying to hide her sweet features with make-up. She was really not the sexy type, but she was trying to be. She didn’t need it, though. She was probably the most beautiful woman I have ever seen in my entire life.
