Aleksei offered me money like I was a fucking low-profile criminal. Then he offered me his dirty places in the city. Well, no, his little girlfriend was much more valuable than those. I told him just that. I would prefer having Kira instead of money or more area to control. That was not even a lie.

Michele was still skeptical about my decision to kidnap Kira, but he stayed silent because he was loyal to me. He was hot-headed and a little too easy to lose control, but he was my brother. He was the person I trusted the most after my Consigliere Roberto which was dealing with all the other jobs while I was busy with fucking Aleksei over.

When I stepped into the apartment, Michele gave me a very dramatic greeting. “Oh, welcome, brother. I was really not expecting you to come.”

“I told you I will,” I said and made my way to the terrace to have a smoke.

Michele followed me. We really didn’t look like brothers. He was only two years younger than me but much smaller. He was not much taller than our eighteen-year-old sister. Among all four siblings, he was the only one that wasn’t blonde. I had a darker complexion than my sister and little brother, too, but Michele looked exactly like our mother. Dark eyes and dark hair. People called him the Dark Sheep but only when he was not in earshot. When he was close to them, they called him Edge. Probably no explanation was needed for that nickname.

We sat on the chairs facing each other, both of us lighting a cigarette. He gave me a smug look. “I didn’t believe you could leave your pretty little captive.”

I exhaled a cloud of smoke in disgust. Why the fuck everybody acted like I kidnapped her to fuck her? I was still tense from the words she told me before I left anyway. I could get women when I wanted. Why would I capture one to have sex?

“My reasons have nothing to do with her, Michele. This is about Aleksei,” I answered. I didn’t want to be fiery with him because he was always on edge, like his nickname, and I was not in the mood to have a fight.

He shook his head with a small laugh. “I don fucking believe it. Kidnapping his wife was a better idea.”

It was not, and I explained it a thousand times why. I made this plan very neatly. It was not because I wanted to see Kira again. And even if it was, it was still a good plan. Kidnapping his wife was not better, and even though Michele very well knew my reasoning, I decided to explain it one more time. “His wife is a Nikolayev. If we kidnapped her, we would have poked too many bears than we could deal with. Kira is his mistress. His men are not going to care about taking her back. He is not going to get help from anyone. He is going to be weak against us.”

Michele didn’t seem convinced. “Then he won’t even bother. If he knows he is going to be weak, then why would he still fight to get her back? She is just his whore. He will find another one.”

My jaw flexed at his words. “He is not going to let her go.”

“How do you know?”

“Because when you get a woman like that, you don’t let go. He is obsessed with her. He wants her back. He will not stop, and I will ruin him thanks to Kira Kozlov.”

And I was right. I knew I was right. It was not because Kira was beautiful. She was gorgeous, but there were many gorgeous women in New York. There was something different about her. She was bewitching. Every man who lay eyes on her would want to have her, to claim her. I knew it was not just me. I knew Aleksei was obsessed with her too. He didn’t marry her but kept her in a tower like a beautiful precious princess. He had many whorehouses, but he never had any other favorite. Kira was special to him.

And now she was mine.

“I think you are exaggerating,” said Michele. I was not expecting him to understand it anyway. “I can find you a hundred other redheads with milky asses. And they will be younger than her too.”

Like I was interested in youth. Michele always liked his woman young, mostly eighteen or nineteen. I preferred them closer to my age.

“It is not that simple,” I said because he was not going to understand even if I explained it.

Michele didn’t stop, though. He had a terrible big mouth. I usually didn’t say anything because there were times that it was helpful, especially since I was not a big talker. “So, you are saying they are inlove?”

It was a mocking question, but it pushed me to reconsider some things. I thought out loud. “I did, actually. I mean, I knew he was obsessed with her in some way, but I thought she was in love with him.”

“You do not anymore?”

After seeing her in her own blood? After seeing the horror in her eyes? “No.” Kira not being in love with him gave me a strange sense of satisfaction, but if she no longer wanted to be with him… “He was keeping her captive.”

Michele threw his head back and laughed. “From one captor to another.” I felt sick to my stomach. “You know that could be beneficial.”

“What do you mean?”

“She can help us. I mean, she might be playing games with you, but if she is not, she might want to help. You should talk to her.”

“Talk to her about what?”

He rolled his eyes like it was so very obvious. “About her relationship with Aleksei. We might play this better if we know what she means to him.”

I really didn’t want to talk to her about Aleksei. I didn’t even want to think about her with Aleksei, but Michele had a point. She was acting so weird. I wanted to know how things went downhill. I wanted to know why he didn’t marry her. I wanted to know what he did to her so I could take even more pleasure from ruining him.

I nodded and took another deep breath from my cigarette. “I will talk to her.”
