It was fun. It felt like we were two teenage girls having a sleepover. It felt like experiencing something I was robbed of. I wanted more of it. I wanted to get everything I had missed because of Aleksei before I died.

In the evening, I got to meet Michele Falzone, Gabriele, and Priscilla’s brother. He didn’t look like them at all. He actually looked more Italian than both of his siblings. But other than physical appearance, there was something more. Michele felt different than them. He didn’t look at me in the way other Falzone’s did. He looked at me like any other man I have seen in my life.

He looked at me like I was just a pretty nothing.

I hated it.

I was also surprised at how much it bothered me. I was used to those looks before, but spending just a few days with people who treated me like I was human changed so much. It took me years to get used to those disgusting looks but only a few days to go back.

This life was very easy to adapt to. This was a good life.

Michele Falzone said that he was here to take Priscilla away. She said there was no way she was going back to the Hamptons, so Michele offered to take her to his apartment. I could tell Priscilla was not happy about it.

“I don’t trust you with the captive,” he said to Priscilla like I was not in the same room. “She shouldn’t even be out of her room.”

“You are making a fuss,” Priscilla answered with an eye roll, but her brother didn’t back off.

When she asked him if Gabriele thought the same way, he said that he didn’t, and I felt relieved. He didn’t stop Michele from taking Priscilla, but he was okay with us spending time together. He wanted me to have someone when he was away.

Michele took me to my room and locked me inside. I felt some old memories coming back with being left alone, but before he left, he told me that Gabriele was going to be home tonight.

Then I was going to gather my courage and talk to him.

I was determined on that because I didn’t have much time to do it. My death was close, and there was one thing I wanted to do before that happened.

Chapter 10

Gabriele

I didn’t have to do that meeting with Roberto. My focus was on the Bratva, and Roberto was good at handling things on his own. He was respected as my Consigliere and as his own man. There was nothing to worry about. Yet not having that meeting meant coming back into the house.

It was a big internal battle for me. I wanted to come back to the house, and I wanted to stay away as long as I could. I wanted to touch Kira, and I was scared of touching Kira.

I was not ready to face her.

But I needed to face her. I didn’t want her to think I left her because she had done something bad. I stayed away longer than necessary because of my own cowardness because I didn’t know how to act around her.

I had no idea how other men only madeonemistake for a woman. Obviously, they never got to meet someone like Kira Kozlov. I was a goner when it came to her.

When I came home, it was late, and she was most likely sleeping since Michele locked her into her room. I still wanted to check up on her. I needed to see her. To make sure she was okay.

I slowly unlocked her door and opened it to sneak a peek. She was not asleep like I imagined. Her bedside lamp was on, and there was a shape made out of strings in her hands. When she looked up at me, a small smile appeared on her face, and my ribcage became extremely tight for my heart.

“You are home,” she said happily. Her cheeks were slightly pink.

I closed the door and walked towards the bed. My eyes went to the string in her hand. “What are you doing?”

She looked down at her hands and flushed even more. “Uh, I was waiting for you, and there are not many things to do here. This is actually dental floss.”

A horrible feeling filled me. I locked her in this room without really anything. I gently put my fingers into the holes in the shape and took it out of her hand. I didn’t even remember how it was played, but it was not too hard to figure it out. “I should have given you something. Maybe a Gameboy?” I suggested with a teasing voice.

Kira laughed and took the string from me with skillful fingers. “I never had one of those. But this—” she pointed at the string, “This, we always played with my mother when I was little.”

For some reason, it eased the ache in my chest. I didn’t want her to do the same things she did when she was alone in Aleksei’s mansion. What this reminded her sounded like a pleasant memory. It belonged to a timebeforeall her pain started.

I tried to take the string but couldn’t find where to hold it. When I placed my fingers, Kira laughed. “That will never work.”

The sound of her laughter was so amazing. I would make a hundred more silly moves in this game to hear it again and again.
