The light in her eyes disappeared, but she didn’t look as desperate as before. Her eyes narrowed on me. “Not now? This means you will kill me later?”

“Seems like I owe you a life.”

“You are,” she said, but she didn’t sound sure at all.

So, I assured her, “I am.” I needed to make a deal with her. “You also owe me a life. That night I couldn’t kill Aleksei because of you. Now I need you so I can ruin him. After you help me, I will kill you.”

“What are you going to do to him?” she asked, skeptical.

Yeah, no fucking way. I laughed mockingly. “I learned that it is really not a good idea to give you inside information eight years ago. So, that is none of your concern. Now, do we have a deal?”

She thought for a second and then bit down her bottom lip. When she looked up at me, she looked like a little kid. “You won’t let him take me, do you?”

I didn’t know why she was afraid. I didn’t know what happened between them in the last eight years, but it was probably not the time. So, I only answered her question truthfully, “Never.”

Something shifted in her eyes. And she nodded, smiling a little smile. “Deal.”

Chapter 4

Kira

After our agreement, Gabriele took me to his own penthouse. He said that he needed to be sure I was going to stay alive even though I promised.

To be honest, I was not sure if I was going to try again or not when I had the opportunity. If I could stay alone and unwrap the bandages, maybe I could rip my stitches, but that was much more violent than cutting a piece of flesh. It turned my stomach upside down. I was not even brave enough to endure pain for the sweet prize of death.

But if I could find a painless option, I might be tempted to try again. I had no idea what I would do then.

The deal was good, but what if I had a chance at something even more guarantee? I had no reason to doubt his promise, but I also didn’t have any reason to believe him. I found comfort in his eyes for years while he was also the person I hated the most, but despite those, I didn’t really know him.

For some reason, I believed the other thing he said entirely. I believed that he would never give me back to Aleksei. It was stupid for him to keep me, but I still believed it.

MaybeIwas really stupid.

Because of the calls he made before we left the other place – which was also an apartment – there was already a room ready for me. It was a nice room with soulless white furniture. All penthouses were like that. Actually, the penthouse Aleksei bought for me was like that too. They lacked the homey sensation.

It was not important, though. This was not my home. This was the place I was going to wait for my promised prize.

When we got into the room, I turned back to Gabriele and asked, “Are you going to lock me in?”

This was the smart thing to do. This was what Aleksei did when he first got me. But for some reason, Gabriele seemed like he was very uncomfortable with the idea. “I will try to find another solution, but I have to for now. I don’t trust you to not try again.”

Honestly, it was wise to not trust me, but it created a bad feeling in my stomach. I wanted him to trust my word even though it was not trustworthy. “You don’t trust me,” I murmured to myself while still checking the room. I was too calm for the situation. Maybe it was because Gabriele didn’t give me any indication that he was planning to hurt me. Maybe it was because he promised to kill me. However, it was probably because of him. The memory of his eyes calmed me for years, and now that they were real, I couldn’t help but feel safe around him. It was so stupid, but I couldn’t stop.

“You didn’t give me a reason to trust you,” Gabriele said with his thick voice.

I turned back to him to look into his soft brown eyes. I was a tall girl but still looked short next to him. His golden hair and three-piece suit were just perfect. He had a short stubble that looked delicious on him. He was probably the most handsome man I have ever seen. Unfortunately, I knew that it meant nothing. In the end, every man would just hurt you.

I wondered if getting hurt by Gabriele was any different than getting hurt by Aleksei. I wondered if they were any different.

My two captors.

“Did I give you a reason to not trust me?” I asked. I couldn’t stop myself. I wanted to ask all the questions and get all the answers.

Another mocking smile took hold of his lips. That was a look that hurt me. For some reason, it hurt me more than his anger. “Of course, you did,” he said without hesitation. “Eight years ago.”

Eight years ago. What did I do to lose his trust eight years ago? I wanted to ask why he told me to escape that night. “What did I do?”

“You told Aleksei about the attack,” he said accusingly. “Or you just took him with you, I don’t know.Youcost me his life.”
