I was not planning to do that, but I also didn’t want to give her a ring right before the wedding. I wanted her to go to New York with my ring on her finger now. I wanted everyone to know she was mine. The news was probably going to spread faster than the ring, but I still needed it strangely.

“I can send the ring to you when it is made,” I suggested.

The damned woman again shook her head. “You should be the one to put it on me, Antonio. I’ll plan the whole wedding, but this is on you. There must be a ring you want to give me.” She almost looked disappointed by my lack of enthusiasm. I hoped she would get used to it fast.

My pocket felt heavier and heavier. I knew what I wanted her to wear, even if it was stupid. Her preference mattered the most. What I wanted shouldn’t have been considered, but she was pushing it. I reached to my pocket for the red velvet box without thinking further. “I actually have a ring.”

She bit down her bottom lip with excitement. It was fascinating how bright I could make her so easily. It felt dangerously addicting.

“I thought you said you didn’t buy one.”

I cleared my throat again. “I didn’t.” I looked down, acting like I was inspecting the box. “My father gave this to me when I told him about the engagement. I told you my mother passed away when I was very young. This was her ring.”

For a few seconds, she was damn silent, so I finally looked up. Her green eyes were huge and shiny. Her smile seemed sad but still beautiful. “You are giving me your mother’s ring?”

“I don’t know if you are going to like it. It is a little different. I can get…” Priscilla pressed her fingers on my lips to silence me.

“I want this one,” she said with a determined voice. It didn’t make sense. She didn’t even see the ring.

I decided to take the matter into my own hands and opened the box, presenting Rosetta’s ring to her. It was a gold band with a ruby in the middle and a small diamond on either side. I knew Priscilla enjoyed gold jewelry, but I didn’t know if the rest was to her liking.

Her eyes focused on the ring for a little too long, so I spoke, “It is not a very traditional wedding ring. You don’t have to put it on.”

She looked at me with huge eyes. “Are you kidding me? It is beautiful, and it was your mother’s ring.” She put a hand to her chest. “Antonio, I would be happy and proud to wear this ring until I die.”

I felt a weird sensation inside my chest at her words. It was time to see that doctor for heartburn. I was not turned on but was still getting all these strange sensations. I wanted them gone. My throat was also dry. I tried to swallow.

At my loss of words, Priscilla extended her hand. “Can you put it on me?”

“Of course,” I said, trying to put myself back together. I took out the ring and put it on her finger. It felt just a little tight but still fit. The sight was so perfect. Her white, long nails, pale skin, and ruby looked beautiful together. It was like a painting. It was just an artsy fascination.

It was not about seeing Rosetta’s ring. It was not about real feelings. I didn’t want her to bring them back to me. I wanted to ignore the intense possessiveness.

“It is a little tight,” I observed. It was the only logical thing I could think of at the moment.

Priscilla shook it off, “I can have it fixed.” And she looked up at me, getting into her tiptoes and laughing when she nowhere near reached my lips. “How can I kiss you spontaneously? You are a giant!”

“I am 6’7”,” I said. It was best to stick to the facts because the fact that I was kissing her while she was wearing my ring was making me crazy. My fucking feelings were much more intense than ever. It was all Rosetta’s fault.

“That is a giant height,” she said, smiling. Her eye went to her ring for a second. “You have to kiss me,” she said impatiently.

I captured her smiling lips. Giving her small pecks. I couldn’t risk getting lost in the kiss. I couldn’t get lured by her lips.

She tried to deepen the kiss, so I spoke between kisses to stop her. “You just tell me, and I’ll kiss you.”

Priscilla bit my bottom lip. I could feel her ring on my neck, making me more possessive than I thought possible.

“Not good enough,” she murmured between kisses.

I hardly pulled back and reached for the ringed hand that was on my neck. I brought it in front of me, sparing a second to admire how right it looked, and then put it on my chest. “When you want me to kiss you, you’ll tap my chest twice, and I’ll kiss you. No matter where we are.”

A smile slowly appeared on her face, and she looked at me with so much amazement. I knew I had seen this look before, but no one did it as good as her. I also knew no one ever looked atmelike this before.

I wanted to kiss her so much. And luckily, she tapped my chest twice.

So, I did. I kissed her. I got lost in her kiss. I got lured. I let myself feel just for a while.
