Dario. Priscilla’s bodyguard.

The weird unease I only felt once before when Mia was kidnapped appeared inside my chest. I answered after the second ring. “Something wrong, Dario?”

“Boss, I am sorry to disturb you, but Mrs. Mazzoni doesn’t obey the orders. She keeps dodging me.”

My chest relaxed, but my voice remained hard. “Isn’t it your duty as her bodyguard to make her not dodge you?”

Priscilla was used to avoiding her bodyguards and living freely. I didn’t want to take away her freedom, but she was a great target. The last thing I wanted was for her to get hurt. She accepted Dario when I told her this but old habits were coming back.

I knew the reason Dario called me was also my orders. I told him not to take any risks. He was supposed to tell me every suspicious thing. Yet, I was still angry that he couldn’t manage to do his job on his own.

“We are walking the dog, and she keeps running. I had to catch up with her three times. She refuses to keep me close.” His voice sounded desperate. He probably didn’t want to call me for it but was afraid not to in case something really happened to Priscilla.

Just when I was about to answer, I heard her voice in the background but couldn’t make up her words. “What does she say?”

“I am giving the phone to her.”

I waited, and then Priscilla’s annoyed voice rang in my ears. “It is not my fault that he cannot run fast in his suit. Apollo goes to where he wants and as fast as he wants. He is a puppy; I can’t control him.”

“Priscilla, we talked about this. I don’t want you vulnerable in the middle of the city.”

She sighed, and I could almost see her rolling her eyes. “I am not alone! Apollo is pretty scary.”

Exactly. “That is another reason I don’t want you alone.”

“Ugh, I hate this.”

I knew whatever I said was not going to change her attitude. I could send her home today, but she was going to dodge Dario next time as well. She was not going to let him close to her. I didn’t want to risk anything with her.

Sometimes I thought maybe her attitude was caused by her young age, but it was probably not that. This was just Priscilla. Everything about her was both frustrating and fascinating.

I rubbed my face and took a deep breath. “I will take you to running from now on then. You are usually awake before I leave anyway.”

“But you will have to wake up earlier,” she said with a sad voice.

“I don’t mind.”

“You care about your sleep.”

“I care about you more.”

She was silent for a while and then murmured, “Thank you.” She sounded a little shy. It was not very common of her.

I looked at the door of Vista, the nightclub Salvatore’s office was located in. I was late for the meeting, but I didn’t want to worry about Priscilla while I was in there. “Now go back home, okay?”

“Okay,” she said with a weak voice, but when she added, “See you tonight,” she sounded happy or maybe even excited. I was only pleased that she was both safe and happy. Turns out it was hard to find them both at the same time.

Priscilla

After I hung up on Antonio, I didn’t run. I really hated walking with a bodyguard. Dario usually watched me from afar or left me alone when we went to other places. He usually felt like my driver, but walking Apollo was another task.

I really didn’t want to make Antonio worry over me, but I was skeptical Russians were going to attack me while I was walking my dog.

Being a valuable captive also meant being a dangerous captive. No one would risk starting a war with both Mazzonis and Falzones. It was a no-brainer. That’s why I felt pretty safe. I used to be more careless in New York, and nothing ever happened to me. Antonio was only exaggerating.

Yet, I was happy about his decision. I wanted to walk Apollo with him. It would help them develop a better relationship and also let us spend more time together. I was missing him immensely, even though he almost never came home late. It was not about being bored too. I was good at finding things to do. I was actually very busy. Still, I missed my husband. I wanted him close all the time.

When I was done wiping Apollo’s paws and ready to get into the shower, my phone rang. I really didn’t talk to anyone, but I looked at it thinking it might be Antonio. Dario was not staying inside the apartment with me, so he might get worried again if I didn’t answer the phone.
