It was annoying.

“I actually love kids. Between my sister, my brother, and these two, there are many babies around me. I am their favorite uncle, of course.”

Priscilla nodded with a smile. “He really is great with them. I am sure he is going to make a great dad one day.” She even fucking winked at me.

“Maybe I will. I have no rush to have my own kids yet. I am still young.”

Involuntarily something got stuck to my throat. It was supposed to make me feel relieved. My subconscious, apparently, had different plans with Valerio Vasile, but it was not going to happen. I was not flirting with him; I was not getting to know him for romantic reasons. I was just playing a game, and I needed to know how he could fit into that.

I had an agenda, and his feelings about kids didn’t affect that.

“One of them is your sister, right?” Priscilla asked, her eyes still on the kids playing together.

I looked at the little smiling girl, and a smile of my own appeared. Elsie was the only person I truly loved. I would make things right for her. “Yes,” I said as emotions clogged up my throat. “The one in the yellow dress.”

My smiling, love-filled gaze was caught short by Valerio as he said with amusement, “The one matching yours.”

I managed a pleasant but dull expression before looking back at him. It was my perfect mask. “She likes that.”

I waited for him to make a joke about how I was dressed like a four-year-old now, even though I was dressed like a slut yesterday night. I expected the worst from him. He was the jokester, after all.

Only he didn’t.

He just smiled genuinely and said, “That’s adorable.”

I really hated this man.

He wanted to marry me, and he seemed like he would be okay with all my flaws. He seemed too good, and one thing I learned in my 19 years was that if something was too good to be true, it usually was.

“Thanks,” I said with a fake smile, but Valerio seemed unbothered. I slowly got up from my seat. “If you excuse me, I’ll go to my sister.” Antonio and Priscilla nodded, so I didn’t wait for Valerio’s answer, and I started walking away. I thought being close to him could help me understand him and make up my mind, but it did the opposite. I was confused even more than before.

I didn’t know what the best way to handle this was.

As I made my way towards the little kids playing, a large hand wrapped around my arm, and I heard Valerio’s baritone, “Luce.” I turned to see his face. His brows were furrowed, and his eyes held concern. When it was just us, he was less juvenile, I realized. Maybe he was putting on a mask too.

“Yes,” I said, trying to contain everything happening inside me.

“Did I offend you? If so, I am sorry.”

“I just wanted to see my sister.”

He didn’t look convinced. “Did I do something to make you realize you don’t want to marry me?”

Oh, God. “I don’t know.” In order to make a choice, I needed to understand him, and I was not even close. Why do you want to marry me?”

His jaw flexed once. “I think you are a good match for me.”

“But why? You don’t even know me.”

“And I don’t have a chance to get to know you, Luce. We are both aware this is not a love match.” He swallowed harshly. “It is not like love at first sight exists.”

I didn’t think that way, but it was also irrelevant. “But there must be a reason. I have given you nothing to like other than last night.” My own words stopped me, and I looked at him with horrible realization. “Oh my god, you want me because I am good at sex? You just want a little bed slave as a wife?”

He physically flinched. “Of course not!”

I didn’t believe that. “So, you don’t want to fuck me again?”

His whole body was rigid now. His hand came to my arm again, and he leaned down to my ear. He was too close for public display, but the danger in his eyes didn’t let me move. His gaze left me breathless despite everything. “I would fuck you every way you can imagine and then in ways you have never even thought about, Wildcat, but only if you want that too.”
